Laura Bush Shares a Rare Family Moment with Daughters and Grandchildren
Former First Lady Laura Bush is savoring the last days of summer alongside her daughters and granddaughters.
“I can see us lost in the memory August slipped away into a moment in time,” Laura’s daughter Jenna Bush Hager shared on Instagram on Sunday, August 23, referencing Taylor Swift’s lyrics from “August” while showcasing a heartwarming multigenerational photo from a recent family trip.
In the snapshot, Laura, 79, was dressed casually in a blue button-up and khaki pants, standing with Jenna, 44, and her daughters, Poppy, 13, and Mila, 10. (Jenna and her husband Henry Hager also have a son, Hal, who is 6 years old.)
Joining them in the moment were Jenna’s twin sister, Barbara Bush, and her 4-year-old daughter, Cora. (Barbara, 44, and her husband Craig Coyne also welcomed a son, Edward, in 2024.)
Laura’s husband, George W. Bush, served as President of the United States from 2001 to 2009. Jenna and Barbara were teenagers throughout his two terms in office.
“I would say it was somewhat the laissez-faire parenting of the ‘80s and ‘90s,” Barbara shared with Us in March 2025 regarding the sisters’ childhood prior to entering the White House. “Our parents were always present, but we enjoyed a lot of freedom playing outside, exploring our community, and being out and about in a safe manner. It was a time before cell phones and the constant connectivity we experience now.”
After leaving the Oval Office, George watched his daughters fall in love and transition into parenthood themselves.
In a conversation with Us last year, Barbara expressed her desire to “emulate” her parents’ values with her own children “as much as possible.”
“The world is quite different now,” she noted. “I aspire to parent in a way that reflects those values in today’s environment.”
Regarding Jenna, she mentioned to Us that the sisters’ parenting methods are “pretty similar” to how George, 80, and Laura approached parenting.
“They aimed to create a magical and creative world for us. When you’re very young, everything feels magical,” the Today cohost reflected on the experiences with her parents. “Both parents should be involved in their kids’ lives, but it’s equally essential for parents to embrace that youthful energy, to set aside their phones, and appreciate the joys that children see because it’s delightful and entertaining.”
Jenna elaborated, “Yes, parents can introduce their children to the wonders of the world, but more importantly, parents can experience that magic through their kids’ perspectives. In a world that can sometimes feel dark and challenging, it’s a joy to choose to see the light and fun that comes from viewing the world through your children’s eyes.”
