Big Brother 28’s Kamu Reflects on Friendship with Jason Following Controversy
Big Brother 28 contestant Kamu Kirk is eager to mend his friendship with Jason De Puy after experiencing a rocky relationship during their time in the game.
“For the first week and a half, maybe even two weeks, Jason and I shared a strong bond,” the 32-year-old MMA fighter told Us exclusively on Friday, August 21, after his eviction from the Big Brother house. “We had a few meaningful discussions where we opened up to each other, and we became good friends.”
Kamu mentioned that he was on the verge of establishing an alliance with Jason, 35, in the game’s initial phases.
“At one point, I even considered creating an alliance with Jason called The Night Shift, involving everyone who stayed up late,” he reminisced. “There was a small group of us who would stay up long after others had gone to bed, and Jason and I were part of that, which fostered our strong relationship.”
Kamu noted that he ultimately abandoned the alliance idea because he felt Jason was turning against him.
“Sadly, he started mentioning my name, which naturally led to distrust,” he remarked. “Our strategies just didn’t align.”
While Kamu did not view Jason as a potential ally, he expressed that he “liked” the drag queen “on a personal level.”
“I’m hopeful that we can be friends after the show,” he said. “Well, it seems I won’t see him again until finale night. I’m hoping we can shake hands, hug, and reconnect. It was never personal for me; it was always about the game.”
During Kamu’s Head of Household period, which led to Jason’s eviction, he openly criticized the RuPaul’s Drag Race star for playing both sides during the infamous Tea Party incident.
“Because his gameplay unraveled during [Rick] Devens’ nomination, and then he began mentioning my name, which initiated the rift between us. However, he later apologized, we shook on it, and all was well,” Kamu explained. “Then, while I was HoH, several people approached me, saying, ‘Hey, man, Jason’s saying this about you, and that about you.’ But he varied his stories for different groups.”
Kamu elaborated, “The Tea Party situation was basically about getting everything into the open. He was sharing conflicting information with everyone involved. I wanted everyone to hear what he had to say altogether so that they could decide whether what he was saying aligned with what he shared privately.”
Though many viewers felt the Tea Party argument inappropriately targeted Jason, Kamu reiterated, “It was entirely game-related.”
“I recognized he’s a fierce competitor, and if he remained, there was a good chance he would come after me, and I didn’t want him to rally a group against me. Ensuring that people did not trust him would benefit my game in the long run. But again, it was all about strategy—not personal,” he stressed.
Kamu also drew attention while in the Big Brother house for remarks that some perceived as anti-drag. While speaking with Devens—who orchestrated Kamu’s eviction—Kamu made comments regarding Drew Campbell wearing unicorn pajamas.
“I stated, ‘Bro, miss me with the drag stuff.’ Just miss me. I’m still an MMA guy, and I have an image to maintain,” Kamu remarked on the live feeds in July.
While many fans interpreted Kamu’s comments as a slight toward Jason, it wasn’t directed at him. After his eviction, Kamu clarified his remarks and expressed his affection for Jason in several exit interviews.
“Jason and his friends can dress however they choose, and that’s perfectly fine with me. However, I also wish to dress comfortably and not feel pressured to conform,” Kamu told Entertainment Weekly. “I genuinely care for Jason on a personal level. He can do whatever he wants, and I just hope for that same respect in return.”
Big Brother airs on CBS Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
