Luke Grimes Stands by Kayce’s Romance Following Monica’s Death in “Marshals”
As the spinoff of Yellowstone, titled Marshals, begins to unfold with Kayce moving forward after the loss of his wife, Monica, Luke Grimes recognizes that not all fans may welcome this narrative shift.
“[Showrunner] Spencer [Hudnut] and I have discussed how to approach this so that the audience can accept it without becoming upset,” Grimes, 42, shared with Entertainment Weekly on Thursday, September 10.
He emphasized that the writing team is taking a “slow and careful” approach for Kayce’s character arc, stating, “A significant amount of time has passed, and it’s essential to place Kayce in scenarios where viewers can understand his desire to seek connection again.”
While Kayce continues to grieve, there will also be deeper discussions regarding his potential decision to remove his wedding ring.
“Is it just a fleeting moment, or does it linger?” Grimes reflected. “It’s challenging because we want to honor it, despite it being a character of fiction.”
He elaborated: “[Playing Kayce …] it begins to feel like he is a genuine person. At times, it can be confusing. He has been a part of my life for such a long duration, and I hope he finds happiness.”
Yellowstone, which ran from 2018 to 2024, introduced Us to Kayce and his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), who remained central to the storyline right up to the final episode.
After working at a local educational institution on the Broken Rock Indian Reservation, Monica advanced to a professorship at Montana State University, all while balancing life with Kayce, who later brought them back to Yellowstone Ranch due to conflicts with his father, John (Kevin Costner).
Kayce and Monica’s storyline concluded with them alive and together, but the premiere of Marshals revealed the tragic news of Monica’s death following a battle with cancer.
The cast of Yellowstone has continued to thrive following the success of the Paramount Network series, with some embarking on their spinoffs. Debuting in 2018, Yellowstone captivated audiences with its riveting tale about the struggles surrounding a large cattle ranch and the adjoining Broken Rock Indian reservation.
“Kayce had such a perfect conclusion in Yellowstone,” Hudnut mentioned to TVLine at the time. “His aspirations had finally materialized. As we explored the next chapter of Kayce’s journey, it became clear that he needed to be jolted from that stability. Sadly, tragedy always seems to follow Kayce, and so something unfortunate had to occur, which ultimately involved Monica.”
Hudnut observed that Monica’s demise will play a significant role in motivating Kayce, adding, “In my view, Monica is truly guiding Kayce in this opening episode, aiding him in discovering a new direction. If you break it down, Tate attends that rally to honor his mother, and Kayce is there to protect Tate. Thus, without Monica, Kayce might not have been in that position, and his new path may not have emerged.”
He concluded: “We aimed to be considerate in how we bid her farewell. I also wanted to respect the conclusion of Yellowstone, as it was incredibly well-done. Unfortunately, reality interfered.”
Asbille, 35, has yet to comment on Monica’s passing. However, she did grant permission for her likeness to be utilized in the series, enabling Marshals to feature images of her character on screen.
Marshals will return to CBS on Sunday, October 4, at 8:30 p.m. ET, with subsequent episodes available for streaming the following day.
