Gwyneth Paltrow Discusses Merging Families with Brad Falchuk
Gwyneth Paltrow has shared her experiences regarding the challenges of blending families with her husband Brad Falchuk.
“I have one girl and one boy, and Brad has one girl and one boy,” Paltrow, 53, mentioned on the Tuesday, September 8, episode of the “Friends Keep Secrets” podcast, speaking about her daughter Apple, 22, and son Moses, 20, with ex-husband Chris Martin, along with Falchuk’s daughter Isabella, 22, and son Brody, 20, from his previous marriage to Suzanne Bukinik. “So I have two girls and two boys.”
The Goop founder expressed, “They all get along, and it’s so fun.”
Paltrow and Falchuk, 55, exchanged vows in 2018. The Iron Man actress confessed that it was “so hard” to bring their families together.
“It was like the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” she revealed. “It just didn’t go well for a really long time.”
Paltrow explained that “kids can feel like they’re being sort of demoted” when their parents remarry. (The Seven actress was married to Martin, 49, from 2003 to 2016, while Falchuk was married to Bukinik, 56, from 1994 to 2013.)
“They’re not, but they can feel like [that] if there’s a new parent that comes in, and it can cause a lot of disturbance. So it was hard. It was really hard at the beginning,” she stated.
Paltrow noted that their family dynamic gradually improved over time.
“We never did family therapy altogether, but I, I don’t know, it just ended up … I did a lot of introspective work around why is this so triggering, and why are my feelings so hurt, and why am I having such non-adult reactions to a child, you know?” she continued. “They ended up teaching me so much, and I am genuinely grateful for having gone through all that, but it was challenging, yet now it’s fantastic.”
Paltrow concluded, “They’re all best friends.”
Last year, the entrepreneur admitted that Falchuk’s children filled a significant void in her life.
“My dad [Bruce Paltrow] once said his only regret was not having more kids, and I felt that way too until I got yours,” she shared with her husband during her “Goop” podcast in April 2025. “I got to expand my family.”
“We faced some truly challenging moments,” she reflected on her podcast last year. “One of the deepest lessons I’ve learned from my relationship with your daughter, which is now incredibly rewarding, is there was [a lot of] testing from her side. She was testing me to see what would trigger a rejection.”
Falchuk expressed his confidence in their ability to overcome these challenges. “I always believed we could work through our issues.”
Paltrow summarized, “It’s been wonderful for me to see all four kids as they grow and embrace this family dynamic. The reward feels greater with stepsiblings than with biological kids because … it’s not as instinctual. You have the chance to shape a relationship with someone who isn’t originally your child but becomes one of your own.”
