Lena Dunham and Husband Luis Felber Celebrate the Arrival of Their First Baby
Lena Dunham has officially become a mother after welcoming her first child with husband Luis Felber through surrogacy.
“Hello. I’m your mama. You look nothing like I envisioned, yet you feel just perfect,” Dunham, 40, shared in a Vogue essay published on Wednesday, September 16, reminiscing about her first moments with her newborn daughter. “We’ve been waiting for you, did you know? It was so kind of you to come.”
She went on to say, “I truly meant it. Like a child uncertain whether their friends would show up for a birthday celebration, I felt bashful and overwhelmed with joy.”
Looking back on her surrogacy journey, Dunham mentioned that she didn’t experience any “jealousy” about not carrying her own child.
“Instead, my jealousy was directed toward the baby, envious of how she got to be safely tucked into someone who exuded such warmth. I could just sense she knew how to navigate any challenges,” she wrote.
Dunham, who married Felber in September 2021, faced fertility hurdles while battling endometriosis. The Girls star underwent a hysterectomy in 2017 but never lost faith in her dream of expanding her family.
“It was both a grief and a relief,” Dunham explained to The Times of London in September 2025 about having her uterus and cervix removed, along with one ovary. “I had expected to experience the transition of fertility and the decline of my cycle, but it turned out to be a swift and sudden end.”
During that time, Dunham expressed that her “big dream” was to nurture children “with British accents, heading off to school in their cute hats and uniforms.” (Dunham and Felber reside in England.)
“I can say we’re currently working on expanding our family in different ways,” she added. “I want to meet our children safely first, and then learn how to share that experience.”
Earlier this year, Dunham elaborated further on her hopes for parenthood during her appearance on Today With Jenna and Sheinelle.
“Some individuals don’t dream of motherhood, but I always did, and it was a significant part of my identity that I envisioned for myself,” Dunham shared in April when discussing how her hysterectomy altered her plans. “In a remarkable twist, since that moment, I’ve met many people who’ve formed their families in diverse ways, and I genuinely feel excited. However it may happen, I will be immensely grateful.”
Dunham had previously believed she would have to “[give] up on motherhood” due to her health issues and her past breakup with ex Jack Antonoff. (The couple was together from 2012 to 2017.)
“There are many things you can change in life — you can end relationships, achieve sobriety, become serious, or offer apologies — but you cannot compel the universe to grant you a child when your body has consistently indicated it’s an impossibility,” she wrote in a 2020 essay for Harper’s Magazine. “Weak creatures succumb in the wild as their companions move forward. Unfertilized eggs do not hatch. Nature cannot be manipulated.”
She concluded, “The irony is that my acceptance of not being able to have a child — my ability to embrace that reality and move forward — might actually be the very reason I deserve to be a parent at all. I think I finally have something valuable to offer to someone.”
