Joe Jonas Remembers ‘Frightening’ Near-Death Encounter on a Boat
Joe Jonas is reflecting on an “intense” near-death experience he had during a recent trip to Italy.
“This is very rocky,” Jonas, 37, shared on The Morgan Stewart Show on Wednesday, September 23, as he recounted the moment he attempted to jump from a yacht to a tender boat en route to a waterfront restaurant with friends. “So, the first mate is helping me onto the tender. … And then, he’s like, ‘Alright, go for it’ … So, I take a step, but as I step, a wave surged in, pushing the tender far from the yacht.”
The Jonas Brothers member acknowledged that it sounded like a “very bougie problem” to have but became “terrifying” when he and the first mate ended up falling into the water and getting trapped between the vessels.
“We’re between these boats,” he continued. “We’re fully dressed, my phone’s in my pocket, everything. And I come up, I’m so out of it. I’m just like, ‘What the f*** just happened?’”
Jonas swam “away” from the boats and eventually found a spot where he could safely climb onto one of the decks. Unfortunately, he struck his shin on the way up and fell back into the water.
“So, I kind of rolled onto this tender soaking wet,” he recalled, maintaining that he was “fine.”
Stewart, 38, witnessed the incident unfold and shared her anxiety as it happened.
“I thought, ‘Vacation’s over. Vacation’s over,’” she said. “It’s going to hit him in the head, and we’re going to lose a Jonas Brother.”
She told Jonas, “You had to swim quite a bit. It was very scary.”
Though Jonas mentioned that his “adrenaline” kept pumping for quite a while after the event, he eventually settled down from the “anxiousness.” He recalled looking at his girlfriend Tatiana Gabriela and saying, “That s*** was really scary.”
“That really spooked me for a while. It was really intense,” he added.
Jonas mentioned that his first thought after calming down was the need to call his daughters, Willa, 6, and Delphine, 4, “right away.” (The singer shares his children with ex-wife Sophie Turner.)
“I just need to call them. I need to see them,” he recalled saying. “I need to see their faces. All I thought about was, ‘I want to speak to them.’”
Jonas concluded that what transpired was “the best outcome of a bad situation,” emphasizing it “could have been really bad” had things taken a different turn.
“Life moves so fast, and it’s so easy that something really bad can happen if [you] don’t have your awareness about you,” he finished.
