Home Improvement Star Reflects on Patricia Richardson’s Departure
Home Improvement star Taran Noah Smith reflects on the departure of his TV mom, Patricia Richardson, from the classic sitcom.
“She had just given birth to twins, plus she had an older child around my age. She really infused the role with a realistic mom [energy],” Smith, 42, recounted during a recently resurfaced episode of the “Outgrown” podcast. “She fought throughout the series to maintain that realism, often insisting to the writers, ‘a mother would never say that’ and pushing them to alter the script.”
Smith portrayed Mark, the youngest member of the Taylor family, in Home Improvement. The cast featured Tim Allen as patriarch Tim, Zachery Ty Bryan as Brad, and Jonathan Taylor Thomas as Randy, alongside Smith and Richardson, 75, who played matriarch Jill Taylor.
Running for eight seasons from 1991 to 1998, Home Improvement saw significant behind-the-scenes changes after the first few seasons when a new writing team and producers came on board, according to Smith.
“The original creators only worked on the show during its first couple of seasons, then they transitioned out. A new batch of writers and producers was brought in,” he explained. “Most of them didn’t have kids, which influenced the show’s trajectory … Pat, the mom, was the one championing the cause for realism.”
Smith mentioned that the new team often penned lines that felt “out of character” simply to “set up a joke.” He noted that while Allen, 73, preferred to take a backseat regarding writing decisions, Richardson was committed to ensuring the storyline remained credible.
“Tim didn’t want to create tension with the writers, which meant a lot fell on Pat to advocate for authenticity,” he remarked. “That contributed to the show’s ultimate conclusion; she grew weary of consistently having to fight for realism.”
Smith also pointed out that the disparity in pay between Allen and Richardson played a part in her decision not to return for a ninth season.
“Tim received significantly more compensation than she did,” Smith revealed. “Her condition for a ninth season was that she would only return if she were paid the same as Tim.”
Richardson has openly discussed the inequity in pay compared to Allen for continuing with Home Improvement.
“I was aware that Disney would never offer me that much. It was my way of signaling ‘no’ and a bit of a protest against Disney,” the actress noted in a May 2024 interview with the Los Angeles Times. “I had been part of the show for so long, and they never compensated me even a third of what Tim was making, while I was working so hard. I was a significant reason why women were tuning in.”
