The Virgin River universe is expanding with a new prequel — but how will the show bring fans back to Mel’s parents?

This beloved family drama, which debuted in 2019, chronicles the lives of residents in a quaint Northern California town, including Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) and her romantic counterpart, Jack (Martin Henderson). The cast also includes Colin Lawrence, Annette O’Toole, Tim Matheson, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Sarah Dugdale, Zibby Allen, Marco Grazzini, Mark Ghanimé, and Kai Bradbury.

Mel’s intricate personal journey has been a central theme of the series, and a Christmas special in season 5 intensifies the drama when Mel uncovers the identity of her biological father, Everett (John Allen Nelson). The sixth season delves into their developing relationship, offering flashbacks that illustrate how Everett and Mel’s mother, Sarah, initially connected. This exploration of their romance paves the way for a more in-depth story in the prequel.

“In season 6 of Virgin River, we are diving deeper into who Everett Reid is, detailing his backstory, and revealing his connection to Virgin River when he first met Mel’s mother, along with what their relationship looks like today,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith shared with Deadline in December 2023, emphasizing the importance of Everett’s relationship with both Mel and the town.

As the original series is adapted from Carr’s book series, the prequel will follow suit.

“Each book centers around a couple and broadens the world beyond their story, putting Sarah and Everett at the forefront, while populating the narrative with supporting characters and other relationships — all viewed through a lens of romance — which is a significant aspect of expanding the show and franchise,” Smith explained to Deadline.

The screenwriter elaborated in a conversation with Us Weekly, stating, “Looking at Mel’s biological parents through the lens of an epic romance feels worthy of a book. [It] could span generations, encompassing star-crossed lovers with the challenges of pregnancy and a father eager to be involved. This unique angle allows us to explore their relationship in ways we have yet to see in the series.”

In Virgin River, it’s revealed that Mel’s mother passed away when she was 11. However, it wasn’t until season 5 that Mel discovered who her biological father was. She learned about Everett through old love letters sent to her mother, even though Everett initially feigned ignorance when confronted. Eventually, he returned, presenting Mel with a music box that held Sarah’s voice.

“The prequel will delve deeper into Sarah and Everett’s narrative while also expanding our understanding of the Virgin River history,” Smith conveyed to Us in December 2024. He mentioned a reference from the series pilot about the McCrae Cabin, a location significant to the local lore, suggesting a family legacy tied to the area that has yet to be explored.

Smith remarked that the flashbacks of Sarah and Everett serve as a foundation for the story.

“Introducing Everett creates a perfect opportunity to explore his connection to the community, having lived there while distancing himself from its dynamics. This setting allows us to introduce a new couple, consistent with the show’s approach over the seasons, without being tied to an existing couple we must serve in the present,” he explained.
