A Surprise Character from ‘White Lotus’ Appears in Season 3

It was already confirmed that Natasha Rothwell would return as Belinda in the third season of “The White Lotus.”

However, viewers were likely caught off guard by the appearance of Jon Gries, who portrays Greg Hunt—husband to Jennifer Coolidge’s character, Tanya McQuoid—sitting at a resort in Thailand during Episode 1.

And there he was. Gries has now become the only cast member featured in all three seasons of “The White Lotus.” Here’s what you need to know about his unexpected appearance.

What is Greg’s role in Season 3 of ‘The White Lotus’?

Greg makes his entrance at the conclusion of the first episode. The scene opens with Greg’s new girlfriend interacting with Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) at the hotel bar.

Chelsea mentions that her boyfriend is currently avoiding her. Greg’s girlfriend adds that her own boyfriend behaves similarly—telling her to “get lost” when she gets on his nerves.

“Ugh!” Chelsea responds, before inquiring how long she’s been at the resort.

Greg’s girlfriend reveals that she has been residing in Thailand for a year and notes that while they have a home on the hill, they come to the hotel for meals.

“We just had a fight, so I’m giving him some space,” she explains. “He’s right behind me. The bald guy in the orange shirt.”

In a surprising twist, the camera then shifts to a man sitting alone at a table, sipping a drink. It’s Greg, looking quite forlorn.

What is Greg’s backstory in ‘The White Lotus’?

For a bit of background, Tanya first encountered Greg, a sports fisherman, at the White Lotus resort in Maui during Season 1. The couple tied the knot and were on vacation at the Sicilian hotel in Season 2.

However, their romantic bliss had evidently faded. Throughout the second season, Tanya gradually uncovered Greg’s scheme to have her killed so he could lay claim to her wealth.

After discovering that Greg had conspired with others at the resort to end her life and seize her money, Tanya retaliated with her own rampage, eliminating them aboard a yacht.

In her attempt to escape following the chaos, she tragically slipped overboard and seemed to perish after striking her head on her way into the sea.

While Greg’s unexpected return in Season 3 caught some fans off guard, Coolidge hinted at the continuation of his character arc in “The White Lotus” nearly two years ago.

“I hope Jon isn’t done with Greg yet,” Coolidge mentioned to Jeremy Allen White in a segment of Variety’s Actors on Actors series in 2023. “I wish there could be some retribution for evil Greg. I think he should, I don’t know, end up in a meat grinder.”

Although Coolidge’s character Tanya has met her demise, she has creative ideas for how her essence might endure.

“Should Tanya return in any form, perhaps she could come back as a seagull and peck out Greg’s eyes,” Coolidge remarked.

We will have to wait and see what creator Mike White has planned for the remaining seven episodes. The second episode is set to air on Feb. 23 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
