CBS Presents “Beyond the Gates”: Introducing the Characters of the New Daytime Soap Opera
Beyond the Gates is set to create a new legacy at CBS, but who are the stars in this eagerly awaited soap opera?
The storyline of Beyond the Gates unfolds in an upscale gated community located in one of the wealthiest African American counties just outside Washington, D.C. The spotlight is on the Duprees, portrayed as “the epitome of Black royalty” within the opulent Fairmont Crest community.
“At the heart of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and esteemed multi-generational family representing the very essence of Black nobility,” the synopsis elaborates. “However, behind their immaculate walls and lush gardens lie intriguing secrets and scandals yearning to be revealed. Those residing beyond these gates are keeping a watchful eye.”
Set to debut on Monday, February 24, Beyond the Gates is historic as the first Black soap opera in almost 35 years. This series, a collaboration between CBS Studios and the NAACP, marks the first daytime soap centered on a Black family since Generations, which concluded in 1991 after just 13 months on air. Additionally, Beyond the Gates leaves its own mark in the soap opera landscape, as the last new daytime show to premiere was NBC’s Passions in 1999.
“The Gates will deliver all the elements we cherish about daytime drama, presented through a fresh and innovative lens,” stated Sheila Ducksworth, President of the CBS Studios NAACP venture, in a March 2024 press release. “This series will pay tribute to an audience that has long been overlooked, potentially paving the way for a significant milestone in broadcast television. Featuring rich characters, engaging storylines, and a prominent spotlight on Black culture, The Gates promises to provide meaningful representation, which is a cornerstone of our initiative.”
