No Hard Feelings is one of those comedies with a premise that is quite unsettling, yet thanks to excellent writing and a talented cast, you find yourself in fits of laughter. In this romantic comedy, down-on-her-luck waitress Maddie (Jennifer Lawrence) is on the brink of bankruptcy after having her car taken away. Desperate for a new vehicle, she responds to a peculiar Craigslist ad from wealthy parents Allison and Laird Becker (Laura Benanti and Matthew Broderick).
The Beckers are anxious about their 18-year-old son Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) entering college in the fall, as he is socially awkward and inexperienced. They decide to hire Maddie to “date” Percy, all without his knowledge of the arrangement. (See? It’s a bit disturbing.)
As Maddie’s exaggerated efforts to woo Percy evolve into a genuine friendship, she shares insights about her complicated history, while Percy starts to gain confidence. The film features outrageously funny physical comedy (there’s a naked fistfight — we won’t spoil the details) along with a heartfelt warmth that will both move and catch you off guard.
