Anne Burrell Discovered Unresponsive at Her Brooklyn Residence: Report
New information regarding the passing of Anne Burrell has come to light.
Us Weekly spoke with a representative from the New York City Police Department on Tuesday, June 17, who confirmed that the Food Network star was pronounced dead “at the scene” in her Brooklyn residence after authorities responded to a 911 call that led to the discovery of “an unconscious and unresponsive” 55-year-old woman.
The details, initially reported by People, indicated that the officers from the 76th Precinct were called to the location “around 7:50 a.m.” on Tuesday. Additionally, the cause of death is currently pending review by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner.
An investigation “remains ongoing,” according to NYPD officials.
While authorities did not officially confirm the deceased’s identity, Us confirmed on Tuesday that Burrell’s home address aligned with the information provided by police in their statement.
Us confirmed Burrell’s passing through a statement issued by her family on Tuesday: “Anne was a beloved wife, sister, daughter, stepmother, and friend — her smile lit up every room she entered,” the statement read. “Anne’s light radiated far beyond those she knew, touching millions around the globe. Even though she is no longer with us, her warmth, spirit, and infinite love remain eternal.”
Burrell is survived by her mother, Marlene, her sister, Jane, in addition to her husband Stuart Claxton (whom she married in October 2021) and his son, Javier.
The culinary star rose to fame as a sous chef to fellow Food Network personality Mario Batali in the pilot episode of Iron Chef America.
Burrell remained by Batali’s side on the show from 2005 to 2009.
While Batali has yet to publicly comment on Burrell’s passing, other culinary personalities took to social media to share their sorrow, including Kardea Brown, host of Food Network’s Delicious Miss Brown. “In utter disbelief. I’m at a loss for words,” she posted in an Instagram Story that day.
The Food Network also released a statement honoring the beloved figure. “We are deeply saddened to announce that our cherished chef, Anne Burrell, has passed away this morning,” the network stated via Instagram on Tuesday. “Anne was an extraordinary individual and culinary talent — she taught, she competed, and she consistently highlighted the significance of food in her life and the joy that a delightful meal can provide. Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, friends, and fans during this time of profound loss.”
Sandra Lee, a television chef and author, Will Coleman, a fellow cookbook author, and Queer Eye star Bobby Berk were among other celebrities who shared their online tributes.
