Clues from the Summer I Turned Pretty Cast on the Potential Love Triangle Resolution

The Summer I Turned Pretty cast is just as invested in the love triangle outcome as the viewers are — but what have they revealed about potential changes to the endgame relationship?

Prime Video’s acclaimed series, which premiered in June 2022, is adapted from a book trilogy by showrunner Jenny Han. The Summer I Turned Pretty centers around Belly (Lola Tung) who finds herself in a love triangle as she navigates her feelings for Conrad (Christopher Briney) and starts to wonder if his brother, Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno), might be her true match.

In the original book series, Belly makes her definitive choice in We’ll Always Have Summer, which is set to influence the third season of the show. Fans, however, are curious whether the narrative will stick to the events outlined in the books or if there will be any alterations.

Han has kept details sparse but confirmed that the final season will elevate the stakes, stating via Instagram in December 2024, “One thing I’ll say about season 3 of [The Summer I Turned Pretty] … there are no filler episodes.”

It appears there are plans to broaden the Summer I Turned Pretty universe — regardless of the outcome.

“I will say stay tuned, but Jenny’s got some exciting surprises. We’re excited for season 3, and she has a vision for more,” remarked Vernon Sanders, the head of television at Amazon and MGM Studios, while speaking to Deadline in September 2023. “This show will remain a significant centerpiece for us, and we intend to keep building it. Jenny has a fantastic vision for where she wants to take everything, and we are already hard at work on developing supplementary pieces.”

“I do believe there’s a strong possibility that the show might diverge from the original book events,” he told Us Weekly in June 2023. “I know where [my character Jeremiah] ends up and what happens. But I don’t focus on that because Jenny crafts the story so brilliantly that I can naturally progress without forcing any direction.”

Following the premiere of season 1 on Prime Video, Han suggested that her vision for the series might not strictly adhere to the book’s events.

“I really had to weigh what the fans are expecting against where the show is headed creatively and find that balance,” she shared with Variety in June 2022. “My main goal has always been to ensure that book fans feel satisfied with the story we’re telling, while also understanding that this is an adaptation in a different format, so it won’t be precisely the same. That’s always on my mind.”

Han also stated: “I don’t want to reveal too much, but the books have been out for some time. You never know what the show might bring. I entered this with an open mind, considering many possibilities.”

More recently, Han hinted at forthcoming surprises, mentioning to Entertainment Weekly in March 2025, “There will be surprises. Some things that [book fans] know and some that they think they know, along with hopefully some elements that will catch them off guard.”

Two months later, she assured the outlet that there would be a “satisfying” conclusion for fans.

“A successful love triangle is one where, regardless of the outcome, people will feel heartbroken,” Han remarked. “If the resolution seems obvious and simple, then there’s no real conflict. No matter what choices are made, someone will inevitably get hurt.”

On the “Wild Card With Rachel Martin” podcast in July 2025, she elaborated, “I’m not fond of overly neat endings. However, I must prioritize hope; if something concludes in a dismal way … That’s my insistence. I believe that’s the main distinction between crafting stories for a younger audience and those for adults — it’s about a hopeful conclusion.

The actress expressed support for potential changes to the storyline. “What I’ve always respected about Jenny is that each season and every decision regarding what’s coming next is solely to enhance the narrative,” she conveyed to EW in the same month. “She’ll never do anything that doesn’t logically fit with the story.”

Briney has not disclosed who he believes Belly might choose — yet he shares his perspective on the back-and-forth dilemma.

“It’s all unrealistic expectations; it’s absurd,” he disclosed to InStyle in January 2024 before reflecting on Conrad’s story arcs. “You won’t just attend Stanford or magically fall in love with your mom’s friend’s whatever every summer at a beach town. It’s simply not realistic. That’s not how life operates.”
