Premiering on Thursday, October 9, the series chronicles Cameron (Miles Heizer) as he enlists in the American military alongside his childhood friend Ray (Liam Oh) in the 1990s. Cameron must conceal his sexuality while navigating basic training with fellow recruits Slovacek (Kieron Moore), Hicks (Angus O’Brien), Nash (Dominic Goodman), John (Blake Burt), Cody (Brandon Tyler Moore), and Ochoa (Johnathan Nieves).
The recruits make advancements until tragedy strikes with Ochoa’s death, triggered by a phone call revealing his wife’s infidelity. This news leads to a volatile reaction, resulting in a confrontation with Sergeant Howitt (Nicholas Logan) and a heart incident that claims Ochoa’s life.
In an interview with Us Weekly, O’Brien discussed this alarming development.
“It was a significant turning point in the series, a major tragedy that challenges and solidifies the relationships developing throughout the show,” he stated. “For many of the recruits, it’s a wake-up call—this is real, not just a game anymore.”
While reflecting on the impactful moment, O’Brien noted its effect on his character, remarking, “Hicks was initially seeking thrills or fun. Yet through tragedy, there are moments where we see how individuals come together and support one another. Hicks may not have valued such behavior before, but boot camp changes something within him.”
O’Brien added, “The recruits develop a deeper mutual respect following that incident. Personally, I believe that Hicks gains an understanding that not every situation needs to be viewed through a lens of humor, even if humor often makes things enjoyable.”
Throughout the show’s inaugural season, a central theme revolves around Cameron’s journey as a gay man in the military, echoing the struggles of Sergeant Sullivan (Max Parker), who advises Cameron to remain in the shadows due to his own experiences as a closeted figure in the armed forces.
O’Brien elaborated on how Boots initiates discussions on authenticity.
“Filming the series was a reminder that despite our differences, we all desire the same fundamental things: happiness, respect, and a fulfilling life,” he remarked. “The beauty of the show lies in its portrayal of diverse individuals from contrasting backgrounds who, under challenging circumstances, learn the strength of relying on one another and appreciate the invaluable lessons that come from different life experiences.”
The actor hopes that audiences take away this poignant message, expressing, “There are individuals across all walks of life you can depend on. Don’t dismiss someone due to preconceived notions about their ability to support you—they may share your desires.”
