Michael C. Hall reprised his iconic role as Dexter from 2006 to 2013. He made a return in a spinoff called New Blood, which premiered in 2021 but concluded in just one season. Dexter: Resurrection is positioned as a sequel series, yet there are uncertainties around Hall’s involvement as Dexter, considering his character’s numerous deaths.

“I’m somewhat aware of what’s ahead but I’m truly excited,” Hall shared with Entertainment Weekly in August 2024 regarding the series’ future. “Having spent so much time with this character, going back and filling in the creative gaps is going to be fantastic.”

Where Is ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Set?

The original show culminated with Dexter living as a recluse lumberjack following the death of his stepsister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter). New Blood suggested that Dexter’s journey had come to an end, a notion that is now being revisited with Dexter: Resurrection.

The prequel Dexter: Original Sin, which debuted in December 2024, opened with a scene where Dexter is resurrected after nearly succumbing to blood loss, hinting at his return in contemporary times.

Who Stars in the Spinoff?

In addition to leading the cast, Hall will continue as the narrator, a role he fulfilled in the original series. Uma Thurman joins the cast as Charley, the head of security for enigmatic billionaire Leon Prater. Peter Dinklage portrays a billionaire venture capitalist in the show. Hall expressed his enthusiasm about having more context for his character through Dexter: Resurrection.

“The scripts have been superb. As a fan, I’m thrilled to see it and as an actor, I look forward to experiencing tangible visuals of what I’ve imagined Dexter’s past to be like,” he teased to EW in August 2024. “This will provide me with a vivid reference for his memories. I’m sure it will enrich my portrayal in the upcoming series, which I can only discuss in abstract terms at this point. It’s quite profound and fulfilling.”

Dexter: Resurrection is currently being filmed in New York and is expected to premiere during the summer on Paramount+ and Showtime.

Showrunner Clyde Phillips explained to The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024 that Dexter: Resurrection should be considered “the next season” after Dexter: New Blood. On the other hand, Dexter: Original Sin acts as a precursor, featuring Patrick Gibson in the role of Dexter.

Dexter: Original Sin takes place in the ’90s and chronicles Dexter’s transformation from student to vengeful serial killer and unsuspecting member of the Miami Metro Police Department. The cast also includes Molly Brown, Martinez, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, Alex Shimizu, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, and Reno Wilson.

Phillips, who originally left the show after Season 4, returned for New Blood and is currently involved in Original Sin.
