Heather Graham Discusses Plastic Surgery, Beauty, and the Aging Process

At 56, Heather Graham is thriving — and it’s not about seeking youth but rather embracing a good feeling from within. “I’m not saying I’m always happy,” she shares with Us Weekly in this week’s cover story, “but I feel like I’ve learned to enjoy my life more as I age.”

This transformation didn’t occur overnight. After years in Hollywood (including iconic roles as Rollergirl in 1997’s Boogie Nights and Felicity Shagwell in 1999’s Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me) and much time spent creating boundaries, abandoning external validation, and prioritizing her well-being, Graham has redefined her perception of beauty. Today, for her, it’s less about perfection and more about achieving balance.

“A career is significant, but without health, you have nothing,” explains the actress, whose latest project, the comedy-horror film They Will Kill You, releases on March 27. “I’m fortunate to be alive and healthy. That’s No. 1, above my career and everything else.”

For Graham, this philosophy shapes everything— from her physical activity and skincare routine to how she manages stress and directs her energy. Her method? A combination of innovative skincare, timeless self-care practices, and a gratitude-focused mindset, all of which contribute to why she feels (and looks!) better than ever.

Sleep, Yoga and Stress Relief

One of Graham’s most effective “secrets” is surprisingly simple: ample rest. “I get a lot of sleep. Sometimes people tease me — I can manage 10 hours, occasionally even 11,” she admits. “I really love sleeping.”

The actress places great importance on movement, especially yoga, which she consistently revisits, even attending immersive retreats (like the one she just experienced in Tulum, Mexico, with friend Molly Shannon!) that provide both a physical and emotional reset. “When I’m really stressed, yoga helps tremendously,” she reveals. “I have this one intensely sweaty class I frequent, and afterward, I just release all my worries and stress. That’s phenomenal.”

Meditation forms another pillar of her routine, assisting her in remaining grounded and present. Last year, Graham informed Retreat Magazine that she began meditating at 21 and has consistently practiced for 40 minutes a day since. When she needs to regain her balance, she finds solace in nature — enjoying long walks, fresh air, and quality time with trusted friends. “Being around those who love you and immersing in nature is vital,” she explains. “It shifts your perspective.”

A Balanced Approach to Diet

Regarding food, Graham has steered clear of extremes — an evolution she attributes to time and self-awareness. “I had some unhealthy eating patterns,” she confesses, reminiscing on a time in her early 20s when she’d skip meals and indulge in sweets. “It’s unfortunate, but I used to think, ‘I don’t want dinner. I’ll just grab eight candy bars or a pint of ice cream instead. Then I’d regret it and avoid regular meals.”

Now, her focus is on balance. She enjoys cooking, often hosting friends and experimenting in the kitchen. Graham reveals to Us that she’s considering a future project focused on women, food, and conversation. “I love entertaining and cooking for others,” she states. “It’s a delightful way to bond, and it feels very nurturing.”

Nevertheless, the Boogie Nights star maintains flexibility. Along with nutrient-rich meals, she allows for occasional indulgences and follows a relaxed form of intermittent fasting. “I enjoy breakfast and lunch… sometimes I skip dinner,” she shares. Regarding the Ozempic trend taking Hollywood by storm, Graham is intrigued but cautious. “Some people love it, and I completely understand the allure,” she remarks. “But I worry that people haven’t used it long enough to fully understand potential side effects.” Instead, she relies on “working out, dieting, and so on.”

Her Go-To Treatments

While Graham hasn’t undergone any surgical procedures, she’s open to trying non-invasive options that yield subtle, natural results. “I’ve never had actual surgery that involves cutting my face,” she tells Us. “But I’ve experimented with microneedling, Botox… and various laser treatments.”

She has tried Ultherapy, Thermage, Sofwave, and Morpheus8 — a radio-frequency microneedling treatment she has recently integrated. For Graham, regularity in treatment matters more than any single procedure. “I’m glad these intermediate options exist,” she notes. “You can do something without having to commit to a major procedure.”

That said, the process isn’t always glamorous. “Some of those laser treatments can be torturous,” she admits. “It’s like an hour and a half of your face being blasted.”

Thoughts on Plastic Surgery

Graham’s stance on cosmetic procedures is refreshingly straightforward: maintain a natural look. “I don’t want to appear unnatural,” she laughs. “My aim is to look authentic.” While the Hangover star has dabbled with fillers in the past, she’s since moved away from that in favor of less invasive treatments. “I stopped getting fillers because I simply didn’t want to,” she mentions. “I’m currently more interested in laser treatments.”

That doesn’t wholly dismiss the possibility of surgery. “I think some people get facelifts and end up looking… I mean, there are those who get it, and it’s great. But I just don’t want to be one of those who has it and looks strange,” she explains. “However, I can’t dismiss the future; who knows?”

Still, she believes in embracing the aging journey — at least to some extent. “I think it’s more attractive to age gracefully rather than look like you’ve undergone peculiar plastic surgery,” she adds. “I appreciate that we now have more balanced options.”

The Underrated Treatment She Swears By

Apart from skincare and fitness, Graham credits one lesser-known wellness practice for her well-being: craniosacral therapy. “It’s like a massage for your nervous system,” she describes the hands-on treatment that applies gentle pressure on the head, neck, and back to alleviate stress and pain. “Leaving a session, I feel so at ease,” she adds, “as if I can truly appreciate all the beauty in life.”

For Graham, that clarity is just as essential as any physical treatment, particularly in managing stress and maintaining perspective. “It’s about where you direct your attention,” she explains. “If you focus on negativity, it expands.”

The Real Secret

Ultimately, Graham’s beauty philosophy transcends perfection, focusing more on alignment. From sleep and yoga to skincare products and boundary-setting, every aspect of her routine is crafted to enhance how she feels, not solely how she appears.

“You must fill your own cup,” she states to Us. “Only then can you give to others.” Now that she’s in her 50s, this inside-out approach may be her most enduring beauty secret.
