James Van Der Beek Reveals His Dad Moved In to Support Him During Treatment
James Van Der Beek is facing his recent cancer diagnosis with the support of one significant person: his father.
The Dawson’s Creek actor expressed gratitude to his dad, James William Van Der Beek, for his unwavering support in a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday, January 25. “The way you have stepped in during my toughest moments this year – without us asking, without expecting even a thank you… has been not only life-saving but also life-affirming,” Van Der Beek shared on his father’s birthday.
“Moving to the ranch while I’m away for treatment. Preparing lunches, starting fires for @vanderkimberly, driving the kids, and even caring for the dogs and chickens (which you never wanted and would likely prefer not to have 🤣),” he continued.
The actor went on to express appreciation for his father’s emotional support as he navigates the challenges brought on by cancer.
“I know it’s outside your comfort zone, but particularly since Mom passed, you have been there for me repeatedly in ways that I didn’t realize I needed so much,” he added. “Witnessing your growth and the kind of man and father you are… instills in me a confidence that I can hardly articulate. I am so proud and grateful to be your son. Thank you for being the best. Ever. Period. And I promise that we’ll never ask you to change Jeremiah’s diapers.”
In November 2024, the actor revealed his diagnosis of stage 3 colorectal cancer. “I’ve been managing this diagnosis privately and taking steps towards recovery, supported by my amazing family,” he stated at the time. “There’s reason for hope, and I’m feeling optimistic.”
Married to Kimberly Van Der Beek since 2010, the couple shares six children together.
Their daughter Annabel shares a birthday with her grandfather. The actor also dedicated a special message to his 11-year-old daughter via Instagram on Saturday.
“There are sweet souls… and then there’s you. The most empathetic heart I know. It’s been a challenging year for someone as sensitive and connected as you, especially when I haven’t been well in various moments – which you seem to understand without me needing to be in the room,” he shared.
Van Der Beek added, “From the moment you entered this world, you’ve had the unique ability to bring joy and tranquility to those around you simply by being you. May you continue to trust that, always remembering that your dad sees you, appreciates you, and loves everything about you. And always will.”
During an interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America in December 2024, Van Der Beek mentioned that he’s physically “feeling really good,” but acknowledged the emotional toll of cancer treatment can be “quite a ride.”
“I’m going to look back on [this in] 30 years and say, ‘Thank God this happened,’” Van Der Beek reflected. “So what can I do right now to make that a reality? That was my mindset about 90% of the time. I would say that the remaining 10% of the time, I was a sobbing, terrified mess.”
