Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Husband Justin Mikita Embrace Their Role as ‘Overprotective’ Parents
Jesse Tyler Ferguson acknowledges that he and his husband, Justin Mikita, can sometimes be “overbearing” parents to their two sons, Beckett, 4, and Sullivan, 2.
“It’s wonderful to witness the early bond between Beckett and Sullivan, especially as they begin to develop their own opinions about Justin and me,” Ferguson, 49, shared exclusively with Us Weekly during his promotion of a collaboration with Tovala. “We can be a bit overbearing at times, always wanting to hug and snuggle them.”
He further expressed, “Together, they’ve already drawn the line and decided that we can be a bit overwhelming. I cherish that they’re already establishing their own boundaries with us. It’s so heartwarming to know they’ll have one another throughout their lives.”
The Modern Family star and Mikita, 39, welcomed their sons through surrogates in 2020 and 2022, respectively. Ferguson is especially pleased that his boys have each other for support.
“I cherish my siblings,” Ferguson, who has both a brother and a sister, told Us. “Having peers around my age to share experiences with, especially regarding my quirky parents, is incredibly important.”
The early bond between Beckett and Sullivan has also influenced how the family of four celebrates holiday traditions.
“We’re figuring things out as we move along. I like the idea of them having their own little Christmas tree to decorate,” Ferguson revealed. “We’re planning to set the tree in their playroom this year, so if it turns out to be an eyesore, we can simply close the door. I prioritize aesthetics.”
He added, “They will get to decorate their own tree in their dedicated space.”
Beckett is highly enthusiastic about the arrival of Santa Claus.
“Beckett is really into Santa. In fact, during our Christmas party last year, Santa came to visit, and Beckett was incredibly excited to show Santa his playroom and bedroom,” Ferguson recounted to Us. “As a child, I was terrified of Santa; I never wanted to sit on his lap. But Beckett has fully embraced the idea of Santa. As for Sullivan, I’m not quite sure how he’ll react. He wasn’t fond of our Halloween costumes this year and wanted us to take them off. So, we’ll see how he interacts with Santa.”
Beckett and Sullivan also have distinct dietary preferences, so Ferguson — the primary chef in the Ferguson-Mikita household — utilizes the Tovala Smart Oven to prepare meals that cater to everyone’s tastes.
“I’m incredibly busy now that I have two kids and a podcast called ‘Dinner’s on Me’,” he mentioned. “Sometimes, I need to prepare family meals, and I look for convenience. I appreciate that it makes dinnertime something I don’t have to stress about.”
He continued, “I’m not a fan of just heating up microwave meals. It offers me the flexibility to eat healthy or indulge a little with delicious desserts. It allows me to enjoy both nutritious and indulgent options while ensuring everything tastes fantastic.”
