Mandy Moore Opens Up About IVF Struggles Before Welcoming Her Third Child
Mandy Moore has shared her IVF challenges she faced prior to the birth of her third child with husband Taylor Goldsmith.
On the Tuesday, June 2 episode of the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast, Moore, 42, revealed to host Amanda Hirsch that after welcoming sons Gus, 5, and Ozzie, 3, she underwent a round of in vitro fertilization (IVF) to freeze her eggs for potential future use.
“I was incredibly fortunate to have gotten pregnant and carried both of my boys … so, I attempted a round of IVF, but it didn’t succeed. We didn’t retrieve any viable eggs or embryos,” the This Is Us star expressed. “I thought, ‘Well, if it’s meant to be, it will happen naturally; otherwise, I am deeply grateful and delighted with my two boys, and our family is complete.’”
Moore and Goldsmith welcomed their daughter, Louise, in September 2024. “Lou just had to make her appearance,” she shared with Hirsch, 37. “It was quite unexpected. We weren’t trying, but we were open to the idea, thanks to the IVF experience.”
Moore mentioned that the news of her pregnancy with Louise, now 21 months old, was so unexpected because she had prepared herself mentally for just two children instead of three. “I thought, ‘Okay, I’m completely satisfied.’ I tried for that and was genuinely thankful to have my boys,” she recalled.
The “Candy” hitmaker has been open about her fertility challenges over the years. In 2021, she discussed the difficulties she faced amid a potential endometriosis diagnosis while trying to conceive her first son. Three years later, after the safe birth of both her boys, she reflected on Instagram about the possibility of being unable to conceive again.
“There was a time I thought I wouldn’t be able to have kids,” Moore reflected in a January 2024 post. “I remember when the doctor mentioned a slim chance of conceiving… then, to our surprise, I became pregnant with Gus.”
In her recent conversation with Hirsch, Moore acknowledged she is “still recovering” from the experience of having three children in three and a half years but feels thankful to have expanded her family without significant pregnancy or postpartum complications. “I consider myself lucky that … my pregnancies were quite smooth,” she said. “I did not experience postpartum issues. Overall, I feel like my journey has been relatively easy, all things considered.”
