Richard Gere and Alejandra Silva Share Insights on Their New Life in Spain
Richard Gere and his spouse, Alejandra Silva, are sharing insights into their new life in Spain.
“The kids were reluctant to let me go this morning,” Gere, 71, revealed during a conversation with Elle España, along with Silva, 41. “They inquired about their mother, and I informed them that she was in a meeting.”
“And where are you headed, Dad?” Gere continued. “To a meeting as well,” he replied.
As reported by Elle España, his family-oriented nature surprises the crew. “It feels like stepping into a completely different reality than many might expect,” the reporter notes, altering the common perceptions of the actor.
Nevertheless, this side of Gere has been familiar to Silva for years.
“Richard is an incredibly devoted and involved father. He enjoys reading stories to them. It looks like a perfect picture, but it’s the reality. He’s a fantastic dad,” she stated.
“He doesn’t cook,” she noted. “I handle that, but when I’m cooking, he plays the guitar.”
Earlier this year, Gere and Silva decided to leave their American life behind and relocate to Spain, which is Silva’s homeland.
Before marrying in 2018 after their meeting in Italy in 2014, Silva moved to America for Gere.
In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Gere mentioned it was time to reciprocate.
“My wife is Spanish, and she dedicated nearly seven years here, so we’re going to spend some time in Madrid with her family. Our kids are bilingual, so they’re going to thrive there.”
Now, during their discussion with Elle España, he expresses that life in Spain is wonderful.
“Honestly, you’re seeing us in our momentum. We are happier than ever,” he mentions about residing in Spain. “She’s happy because she’s home, and I’m happy because her happiness brings me joy.”
According to Silva, she and Gere are “like soulmates.”
“We share the same values, view the world similarly, and from the very first moment, it felt like we had known each other for ages. Such connections happen rarely, if at all… It’s like we were linked by the karma of our past lives,” she elaborated.
Silva and Gere have two children together, five-year-old Alexander and four-year-old James. Silva also has an 11-year-old son, Albert, from her previous marriage, and all of them have moved to Spain as well.
Gere has a 24-year-old son, Homer, from a former marriage, who remains in New York pursuing his acting career, as reported by Elle.
While adjusting to change can be challenging, Gere remarks that it’s simpler to change oneself than to attempt changing others.
“We can all reduce this sense of ego and self. True transformation occurs at that point,” Gere elaborated on the topic of change. “My wife radiates with her open-mindedness and authentic gratitude. Connecting with that—be it through spirit, religion, love, or compassion—is limitless.”
“Our shared activism is one of the strongest bonding elements between us,” Silva added.
In addition to gracing the cover of Elle España, the couple received recognition for their contributions to the Sierra a Mar project with an ELLE Eco Award.
The Sierra a Mar project is a conservation and sustainable development effort focused on protecting and revitalizing coastal ecosystems in Mexico, especially in regions where mountains meet the ocean by promoting environmentally responsible practices and economic opportunities for local communities.
“Being an activist encourages you to inject your values into the world to effect positive change,” Silva emphasized.
“It’s about giving a voice to the voiceless and raising awareness. This carries profound significance, and we must deliberate where to invest our energy; however minor it may seem, we can always make a difference.”
Beyond their environmental initiatives, Silva and Gere are also committed to addressing homelessness.
“The sole reason Richard and I are here in Madrid is to join the board of the NGO Hogar Sí,” she disclosed. “We aspire to assist this country in eliminating homelessness. Our ambition is for no one to sleep on the streets within five years.”
“The journey of empathy transcends religions,” Silva added.
