Roger Howarth Cast in Mysterious Role on The Young and the Restless
Roger Howarth is demonstrating that everything is fair in love and soap operas by making a crossover to The Young and the Restless after spending decades on General Hospital.
On Thursday, August 28, it was announced that Howarth, 56, will be returning to CBS for a mysterious role on The Young and the Restless beginning this fall. As per Deadline, he will begin filming in September, with his debut scheduled later this year.
The specifics of Howarth’s character on the soap opera have not yet been disclosed publicly, though the actor hinted at his return to the genre through Instagram.
“Excited and appreciative … I’m a lucky guy …,” Howarth posted on Thursday. He included a mirror selfie in which he crossed his fingers and added a “Y” and an “R” to the image.
Since his exit from General Hospital in 2023, Howarth has remained relatively low-key, but he boasts a significant history in the soap world.
He began his career on One Life to Live in 1993, portraying Todd Manning. Howarth appeared on the series intermittently from 1993 to 2013.
In 2001, he made an even greater impact by taking on the role of Paul Ryan on As the World Turns, featuring in over 700 episodes of the CBS soap from 2001 to 2010.
Most recently, he portrayed Dr. Austin Gatlin-Holt on General Hospital from 2012 to 2023, appearing in more than 900 episodes, making his departure particularly unexpected.
Howarth’s character was written off in the fall of 2023 when Austin suffered a fatal gunshot wound.
Upon his exit, Howarth confirmed it through an Instagram post sharing “three things that I know for sure” via an Instagram post.
“1 Daytime fans are wonderful, supportive, and dedicated, and I am incredibly grateful to each sparkling one of them,” he shared alongside a shadow picture taken in his yard. “2 I cherished my time at General Hospital and wish the cast and crew ongoing success. It was a joy working with all of you.”
Howarth continued, “3 Life is full of surprises. We never know what will happen next. How fantastic! Always look towards the light. Huge thanks to you all.”
In the following year, Howarth provided fans with glimpses into his home life, spending quality time with family and working on music.
Although Howarth hasn’t appeared in front of the camera since his departure from General Hospital, he has been involved in several soap opera-related projects.
He announced on Thursday that he is reuniting with Kassie DePavia, who played Blair Cramer on One Life to Live, for a Zoom event next month. The former co-stars are also planning a meet-and-greet event in November in New Jersey and a private dinner with fans in Staten Island, New York.
The Young and the Restless airs on CBS weekdays.
