Rory McIlroy Reveals Wife Desires ‘More Time’ in England Following Reconciliation

Rory McIlroy shared that his wife, Erica Stoll, is keen on changing their living circumstances after their reconciliation in 2024.

In season 3 of Netflix’s Full Swing, which debuted on February 25, McIlroy, 35, spoke with Martin Kaymer following his participation in the 2024 U.S. Open. He mentioned that Stoll, 37, wasn’t fond of the Florida heat where he had been training for golf.

“If it were up to her, she would move to England right away, but she certainly wants to spend more time there,” McIlroy mentioned during the episode.

His remarks regarding a potential move came just after he and Stoll decided to halt their divorce proceedings. (The U.S. Open marked the first tournament he played since their reunion.)

Us Weekly reported in May 2024 that the Irish golfer initiated divorce proceedings with Stoll after seven years of marriage.

“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed,” a representative for McIlroy informed the Irish Star that same month. “They emphasized Rory’s wish for this trying period to remain as respectful and amicable as possible. He will refrain from any further commentary.”

An insider exclusively revealed to Us at that time that Stoll felt “lonely in their marriage,” suggesting, “Rory was challenging to be married to.”

The insider elaborated in May 2024 that after McIlroy and Stoll welcomed their daughter, Poppy, in August 2020, Stoll no longer wished to be on the road for his career. “Erica was often absent for most of his tournaments and was primarily focused on Poppy” prior to their split, they added.

Despite their marital difficulties, McIlroy and Stoll reignited their romance in June 2024. The athlete withdrew their divorce by submitting a notice of voluntary dismissal and stated to The Guardian that month, “We have settled our differences and look forward to a fresh start.”

Stoll and McIlroy appeared united for the latter part of the 2024 golf season. She was seen at multiple tournaments, including the Race to Dubai event in November 2024, where she attended with their daughter.

Earlier this month, McIlroy’s marital issues gained renewed attention following the release of the Full Swing season 3 trailer.

“I’ve battled with being the best golfer, husband, and dad,” McIlroy confessed in the trailer. “At times, I feel overwhelmed and it can be quite a lot for me.”

Moreover, reporters were shown discovering his divorce, resulting in widespread surprise.

Throughout the season, which was filmed both before and after the couple reconciled, McIlroy continued to discuss his relationship.

“There are aspects of my life that I prefer to keep as private as I can. Unfortunately, in this profession, that isn’t always feasible,” McIlroy shared with the cameras in one episode. “I’ve always aimed to shield my loved ones from people with bad intentions.”

Reflecting on the media attention surrounding his breakup, he stated, “I think it served as a wake-up call for me to say, ‘Let’s concentrate on golf for a while.’”
