Sean Lowe’s Reflections on Rehoming Dogs Following Family Pet Incidents
Sean Lowe has not had the best experiences with family pets.
In April 2023, the former Bachelor disclosed that he and his wife Catherine Giudici had to find a new home for their dog, Gus. This difficult choice was made after Gus, a Bullmastiff, caused an injury to their eldest son, Samuel.
“The result was a trip to the E.R. and a staple in the head,” Lowe shared via his Instagram Story at that time. “So, as much as I love that dog, I have to put my kids first.”
After two years of grappling with the heart-wrenching decision to rehome Gus, Lowe and Giudici welcomed a new furry companion into their family, which also includes Samuel, Isiah, and daughter Mia. In January 2025, they adopted Moose.
“Santa and Daddy considered the kids’ requests for a dog for Christmas. We’re excited to add this 7-year-old (we believe) rescue boxer to our family,” Lowe mentioned on Instagram at the time. “We hope he loves us as much as we’ve already started to love him.”
Two months later, Lowe found himself in the emergency room after an incident involving Moose.
“My first thought was, ‘I think that dog may have nicked an artery,’” Lowe recounted in a March 2025 Instagram video. “We have the video, but it’s way too graphic to share. You can hear me saying, ‘This is serious. You have to get me to a hospital. Call Catherine.’ I’m grateful my friends were there because they rushed me to the ER.”
Following the attack, Lowe realized he could not keep Moose in the same house as his children. He mentioned reaching out to animal control and the rescue agency to explore the best options moving forward.

Why Did Sean Lowe Rehome Gus?
Lowe shared that he and Giudici made the tough decision to give Gus up after several aggressive incidents involving their children.
“Everyone knows how much I loved that dog; he was wonderful. Very good with the kids, well-behaved, and full of love. However, he showed signs of resource guarding in the past when he snapped at Mia,” Lowe explained via his Instagram Stories in April 2023. “Despite our efforts to prevent it, several weeks ago, when [our son] Samuel bent down to pet Gus, he bit him on the side of the head.”
Where Did Gus Go?
Lowe and Giudici successfully placed Gus in a “great” new home with their dog trainer.
“He gets to go to work every day and be around other dogs. She texted me recently, saying that one pug hates all dogs except for Gus,” he mentioned on his Story. “Must be the close resemblance.”
Did Sean Lowe Want Another Dog After Gus?
When asked if he was ready to adopt a new dog soon, Lowe felt it was too soon to replace Gus.
“It’d feel like cheating on Gus if we got one too quickly,” he noted on social media at the time.
Ultimately, Lowe and Giudici waited two years before bringing Moose into their home.
What Happened With Sean Lowe and Moose?
Lowe was attacked by Moose just under three months after they adopted him.
“I was hosting a barbecue with friends while Catherine took the kids to the mall. It was a pleasant evening, and I had the doors and windows open. But as the barbecue smoke drifted inside, the smoke alarm went off,” Lowe recalled during a March 2025 Instagram video. “I grabbed a dish rag to wave it away from the smoke alarm, and Moose came up, biting it and nipping my finger aggressively, which he had never done before. So, I told him, ‘No Moose.’”
Despite being reprimanded, Moose began biting Lowe’s feet aggressively, leaving “holes” in his shoes.
“With so much chaos happening and the alarm blaring, I firmly told him, ‘Moose. No. No.’ Right at that moment, he showed his teeth and attacked me. This was not like a typical dog scare; he was truly attacking me, tearing into my arm,” he reflected. “I was doing everything I could to fend him off.”
Lowe disclosed that Moose attacked him again after being moved to another area.
“I’m not trying to be dramatic, but I genuinely felt like I was fighting for my life against a dog. Not just any dog, but my dog, you know? Despite having him for less than three months, he felt like my dog already,” he emphasized.
How Does Sean Lowe Feel After the Attack?
Lowe made it clear that he does not blame Moose for the incident. He noted that the rescue informed him and Giudici that Moose had a troubled past.
“I believe it’s evident he endured significant trauma before we adopted him and likely has some neurological issues,” he stated. “It was as if a switch flipped, and he turned aggressive.”
What Did Sean Lowe Do With Moose?
Lowe explained that his parents came to gather his kids while he and Giudici devised a plan for Moose.
“I know given what transpired, I cannot keep Moose in this house. I’ve got young kids, and I need to ensure my safety. I contacted our local animal control, who connected me with a sympathetic officer that also owns a Boxer,” Lowe stated. “We discussed different avenues. I also reached out to the animal adoption agency where we adopted Moose and researched various no-kill shelters. I wanted to determine the best plan of action, and the officer asked me to make my calls and then reach back out to him. He was incredibly supportive.”
Lowe added that his family “misses our dog, as strange as that sounds. He really was a good dog.”
