Selena Gomez’s Season 5 Style in Only Murders: A High-Low Fashion Inspiration
In Only Murders in the Building, Selena Gomez portrays Mabel Mora, who embodies a unique high-low fashion sense.
Her initial scene from season 5 was photographed by paparazzi on Thursday, April 10, in New York City while she filmed alongside co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, who play Charles-Haden Savage and Oliver Putnam, respectively.
Styled by Emmy Award nominee Dana Covarrubias, the principal costume designer for the series since its start in 2022, Gomez, 32, showcased an impeccable fall ensemble.
The outfit consisted of a chic dark brown A.L.C. blazer ($795), a Veronica Beard gingham vest ($548), and an Alice + Olivia caramel leather pleated miniskirt ($250), complemented with sheer patterned tights from Sheertex, which are crucial to Mabel’s character due to their rip-proof quality, as noted by Covarrubias.
She completed her look with a sleek trench coat and Mabel’s iconic gold hoop earrings. Grounding her outfit were a pair of croc-embossed boots featuring a pointed toe and a fashionable yet sensitive block heel, perfect for her crime-solving escapades.
As Covarrubias shared with Us, since Mabel resides in her aunt’s upscale apartment, she “has access to her [aunt’s] closet,” but initially lacked employment until (spoiler alert) Mabel and her neighbors’ true-crime podcast was adapted into a TV series.
The costume designer noted that “we can’t have her wearing too high-end things,” which clarifies the ideal blend of aspirational and accessible fashion displayed in the initial images.
Covarrubias also mentioned to Us that Mabel’s color palette is inspired by Gomez’s red-carpet appearances, yet the singer’s own style sharply contrasts with that of her character.
“I just take the color element, but I’m not putting her in these very glamorous things that she wears in her red carpet life,” the costume designer explained previously.
Nevertheless, the costumes are quite practical, influenced by the realities of urban life in New York City, featuring Mabel’s layers designed for colder weather and warm neutral shades.
The premiere date for season 5 of Only Murders in the Building is yet to be revealed.
