Sidney Crosby Surprises Couple by Photobombing Their Proposal
A couple from Montreal had their trip to watch Pittsburgh Penguins practice take an unexpected romantic turn when captain Sidney Crosby inadvertently became part of a surprise proposal.
This delightful moment was captured on camera, and naturally, the internet went wild.
Mathieu and Sandra visited the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex — the Penguins’ practice facility in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania — earlier this January.
Sandra believed they were simply attending a morning skate, but Mathieu had something else planned: a proposal.
Mathieu had been secretly crafting this proposal for some time. The couple knew they wanted to get engaged, and Sandra had even shared two dream scenarios for the occasion.
“The first scenario involves my family, where I wouldn’t expect it, and the second one is incorporating the sport I love most, hockey,” Sandra mentioned in an interview with the team, published on March 11.
Initially, Mathieu’s plan was to propose at PPG Paints Arena, home of the Penguins. That alone would have made for an amazing story.
But then life threw him a curveball, leading to an even more extraordinary moment than he had envisioned.
Sidney Crosby’s Picture-Perfect Assist
After practice concluded, Mathieu and Sandra were outside the complex, hoping to see players as they exited. At that moment, Crosby drove by and stopped right in front of them.
Sandra was ecstatic; her favorite player was just there. For Mathieu, it was pure exhilaration.
“I knew that her favorite player was Sidney Crosby, and she had no idea I was about to propose,” Mathieu recalled. “Then, Sidney passed by, and she wanted to take a picture with him while I got ready to propose. She had no clue what I was doing, but I was fully aware that the moment was about to happen.”
As Sandra posed for the photo with Crosby, Mathieu was readying himself to kneel. Sandra’s son was there with the camera, capturing the entire scene.
After he popped the question, Mathieu gave Crosby a thumbs-up, a small gesture that made an already incredible moment even better.
The video went viral on TikTok, capturing the hearts of hockey fans and romantics alike.
“We were waiting after the morning skate for autographs when the captain approached us. I seized the opportunity because it was such a magical moment for my fiancée,” Mathieu shared in a comment on the video.
The Pittsburgh Penguins Unite This Family
What makes this moment even more special is the deep connection hockey, especially the Penguins, has to Sandra’s family.
Sandra has been a Penguins fan for over a decade, having fallen in love with the sport after watching Team Canada in the 2014 Winter Olympics.
That year’s roster featured two Penguins players, Crosby (captain) and Chris Kunitz, who helped lead the team to victory.
At that time, Sandra knew little about hockey, but she was struck by Crosby’s talent. That initial fascination evolved into a profound connection with the sport and the team he leads.
“When my son was just 7, I asked him to choose a team for us to support, and he picked the Penguins,” Sandra revealed to the team.
Fast forward 12 years, and Sandra and her now 18-year-old son Shayan are both dedicated Penguins fans. Their favorite player? The same one who unknowingly played a role in one of Sandra’s life-defining moments.
For Sandra, the Penguins have always been about more than just the game. They have served as a way to bond with her son — and now, her fiancé.
“The Penguins have been a huge part of my life with my son,” she expressed to the team. “Hockey has brought us together, and it’s how we’ve spent many quality and exciting moments watching the Penguins play. Having Mathieu in this equation adds so much fulfillment to our lives.”
Sometimes, the most magnificent moments are the ones you never plan for. They can show up unexpectedly, just outside a practice rink in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania.
