Suits EP Responds to Spinoff Concerns, Hints at Surprise Cameos for Original Series
Suits creator Aaron Korsh has responded to fans’ worries regarding the upcoming Suits LA spinoff and its impact on the legacy of the original series.
Korsh, 58, took to X on Sunday, January 26, to address viewers who inquired if Suits LA would “diminish” the original show.
“We’re not attempting to substitute our cherished originals. It’s simply a new team in a different city tackling different types of cases,” he stated, adding in another post, “It feels like everyone wants the originals back. I anticipated this and can’t fault anyone for it. I genuinely hope they give #SuitsLA a fair chance. If they do, I believe they will come to appreciate it.”
Korsh asserted that NBC’s Suits LA is “100% its own entity” but does “have some overlap” with the original series. When asked about Gabriel Macht potentially returning as Harvey Specter, Korsh did not dismiss the idea of additional cameos from past Suits stars.
“The network was very keen on having one original cast member. From a storyline perspective, Harvey was the most logical choice,” he elaborated. “[Suits LA is] its own separate entity, not a direct Suits spinoff.”
Korsh specifically addressed the potential appearances of Patrick J. Adams, Sarah Rafferty, or Meghan Markle in Suits LA, stating, “It remains to be seen.” The executive producer is “open” to the concept but emphasized that his focus is on “establishing these characters in this new show.”
Set in a fictional corporate law firm in New York City, the original Suits featured associate lawyer Mike Ross (Adams), who worked under Harvey Specter. The legal drama, which aired from 2011 to 2019, centered on Harvey and Mike winning cases while concealing the fact that Mike had never attended law school.
The series experienced a resurgence in popularity in 2023 when it was added to the streaming platforms Netflix and Peacock. Consequently, NBC greenlit a spinoff starring Stephen Amell, Josh McDermitt, Lex Scott Davis, and Bryan Greenberg.
“We aim to revisit the highlights. We plan to have a lot of fun,” Amell shared with Entertainment Weekly in December 2024. “We owe our presence in the Black Lane Law group conference room to Gabriel, Patrick, Sarah, Meghan, Rick [Hoffman], and everyone who was part of the original Suits cast. So all of them are always welcome.”
Amell also confirmed that his character shares a special connection with Harvey Specter.
“If you look behind my desk, you’ll notice a photograph of a young Ted Black alongside what appears to be a young Harvey Specter, indicating a backstory between the two characters,” he teased. “We grew up together in the D.A.’s office. So if I had to choose anyone from the original cast to return, it would be Gabriel.”
He continued: “I sincerely hope that happens, as I am a huge fan of his character, and I believe that dynamic would be splendid for viewers. … While I don’t control cameo appearances, I assure that all of them are welcome. We’re creating our own narrative here, and that’s perfectly acceptable. This series will explore avenues that the original was unable to.”
Suits: LA is set to premiere on NBC on February 23 at 9 p.m. ET.
