Tim Minear, Showrunner of ‘9-1-1,’ Discusses Eddie’s Emotional Reunion with Son Chris
🚨🚨🚨Alert: Spoilers for Season Eight, Episode 12 of “9-1-1” are below.
Eddie Diaz has at long last reunited with his son, Christopher, after 11 episodes apart on “9-1-1.”
Season Eight, Episode 12 of the ABC drama picks up three weeks after Episode 10, when Eddie (played by Ryan Guzman) returned to El Paso, Texas, to reconnect with Chris (portrayed by Gavin McHugh), who left Los Angeles after Season Seven concluded.
Titled “Disconnected,” the episode also features dispatcher Maddie Han (Jennifer Love Hewitt) confronting the consequences of her kidnapping.
In the midseason premiere, Maddie was abducted from her home by police detective Amber Braeburn (Abigail Spencer), who turned out to be the serial killer that Maddie and Sgt. Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) had been pursuing.
As her firefighter husband Howie “Chimney” Han (Kenneth Choi) attempts to save her and puts himself in danger, Maddie makes the decision to fight back against Amber, leading to a violent struggle that results in her throat being cut.
“I have to put my characters through hell,” showrunner Tim Minear explains to TODAY.com. “It was her turn. Once I spun that wheel, her number came up.”

In Episode 12, Maddie attempts to return to work, but during her first call, she loses her voice, revealing it to be a psychological response to the trauma she endured.
As Maddie grapples with being away from her job, Eddie also finds it challenging to adapt in Texas. His home is in need of significant repairs, and he is unable to join a local fire station in El Paso due to a hiring freeze. Consequently, he trades his modified truck for a sedan with better fuel efficiency to work as an Uber driver—something he has kept from his parents and Chris.
That is until Chris unexpectedly gets into the back of his car for a ride.
Awkwardly revealing the truth, Eddie recaps the situation over FaceTime to his best friend and former colleague Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark), who encourages him to speak directly to Chris.
While Eddie’s texts remain unanswered, Chris surprises his father with an unannounced visit to his home. The 14-year-old expresses his wish for Eddie to stay in El Paso. Eddie then apologizes for not being truthful about his job, saying to Chris, “I just wanted you to be proud of me.”
“I am proud of you,” Chris replies, leading to a long-anticipated hug between father and son.

Maddie also concludes the episode reconnecting with her daughter—verbally, that is. After a brief moment of losing track of Jee-Yun at a playground, Maddie struggles to call out her child’s name until her voice unexpectedly returns.
Below, Minear elaborates on Maddie’s and Eddie’s significant breakthroughs in Episode 12 and gives a glimpse of what’s next.
This interview has been lightly edited for clarity.
From the Season Two premiere, Maddie has derived so much purpose from being a dispatcher. After the kidnapping, she states, “This is where I want to be.” What did you intend to convey by temporarily stripping her of that ability?
To emphasize where her true power lies.
I found it intriguing that, by being attacked the way she was, having her throat cut, it metaphorically takes away her voice in a psychological sense. Maddie’s voice is vital—it’s what people hear over that line, acting as a lifeline to hope or despair. So, that voice is essentially her superpower.
At the end, when her voice returns, the first word she says is “Jee” (her daughter’s name). What led to that decision?
We explored various ways her voice could come back, and most centered around her child. However, some were overly complex.
It was (writer) Molly Green’s idea to place her in a public setting, creating a universally relatable parenting moment—turning around for just a moment and feeling that panic when you realize, “Where did my child go?”
When she truly needed her voice, it re-emerged. This was influenced by Athena’s earlier advice to Maddie—that she must confront her fears in her role, think of those who depend on her, and persevere. That moment encapsulates Maddie’s journey.
As Eddie travels to El Paso, he and Chris finally reunite after 11 episodes, yet we didn’t see that moment on screen. What might that have looked like?
Eddie feels somewhat like an outsider in his own life. I imagine it would play out similar to what we see now, with Eddie frequently visiting his parents for family dinners. His mother tends to assume the parental role, treating both Eddie and Christopher almost as brothers instead of father and son.
Eddie’s immediate priority is to establish some stability by preparing his home for Christopher’s move in.
Thus far, his story revolves around ensuring he doesn’t pressure his son. He is taking a cautious approach, wanting Chris to choose to return on his own terms. There’s tension with his mother in this dynamic as well.

In “Confessions” (Season Eight, Episode Six), Eddie grappled with the notion of disguise and hiding, learning he needs joy and self-care before he can help others. In this episode, we see him keeping his job a secret. Has he absorbed Father Brian’s lesson?
It appears he is learning from Father Brian’s teachings.
However, this situation differs significantly from his experiences in LA. He was misleading everyone through omission back then, and he’s falling into that pattern again.
Eddie exhibits a tendency to let others infer their own conclusions. While this scenario may seem similar to the Kim storyline where he deliberately concealed his job, here, his intention wasn’t to mislead; he is just too scared to clarify those misconceptions.
Ultimately, upon hearing Chris express pride in him and wanting him close, what does that signify for Eddie at this moment?
It means a great deal. This opportunity opens a door for Eddie, and now he merely needs to step through it.

Could you elaborate on that?
Considering this is the very next episode, I don’t want to give too much away, but Eddie needs to step into his role as a father, and that’s the narrative we explore in the upcoming episode.
Eddie aspires for Chris to move in with him long-term, but his parents have also expressed their desire for Chris to stay with them permanently since Season Three. How will Eddie and his mother’s relationship play out?
The dynamics between Eddie, his parents, and Christopher will be pivotal in Eddie’s story in the next episode.
In ‘Invisible’ (Episode 13), I’ve heard there’s an engaging Hen storyline… What can you share about Hen’s journey?
The episode, titled “Invisible,” reflects the feeling of being unnoticed, even for Hen, which is uncommon for her. However, there’s a beautiful narrative of Hen using her strengths to connect with a patient—a character who feels overlooked—and she helps him realize his importance, though things don’t unfold as expected.
Following Season Eight, Episode 11, which was a significant moment for Buck and “Buddie” fans, the current episode shows signs of normalcy between Buck and Eddie. Their bond appears to be on solid ground despite their prior conflict. Buck was even questioned about his feelings. What is the status of their friendship going forward?
I don’t believe their dynamic has changed significantly. Since Eddie’s introduction in Season Two, I’ve consistently written these characters the same way. They were on solid footing when they parted in Episode 10.
What I can say is that there’s a moment in this episode where Buck encourages Eddie to return to LA. Eddie, in a vulnerable state—faced with a job situation that isn’t working out—suggests returning to his old role because he isn’t currently living with his child and needs to provide for him. Buck replies with, “You can’t come back.”
This reflects a subtle growth for Buck. This time, he didn’t waffle or overthink; he communicated exactly what Eddie needed to hear without any convoluted conclusions. It showcases his growth as he’s prioritizing what Eddie needs in a moment of vulnerability.
As we look ahead to Episodes 14 and 15, there’s another significant two-part emergency on the horizon. The throat slash scene was particularly intense. What can we expect in terms of stakes moving forward? How does this scene set the tone for the latter half of the season?
It can be challenging in a show’s eighth season to continually place characters in peril while ensuring the stakes feel real and impactful.
The stakes will remain exceptionally high for every character as we proceed through the rest of the season.
You mentioned that the next episode will focus on Eddie’s relationship with his parents. There’s some unresolved tension from the Season Four finale regarding the fact that Eddie’s parents are not named as Christopher’s legal guardians in Eddie’s will. Do they know this? Will it be revisited?
I believe that it will be revisited if the circumstances call for a reading of the will.
However, I’m quite sure that Eddie doesn’t disclose every detail of his life to his parents, so I wouldn’t assume they are aware of that situation at all.
If you could encapsulate the rest of the season in three words for Eddie and three for Maddie, what would they be?
Family, faith, and loyalty for both of them.
