Who Was Responsible for Cal’s Death on Virgin River Before Charmaine Left?

After a long wait of over a year, fans finally learned the shocking fate of a character in the latest season of Virgin River.

The season 6 finale, which aired in December 2024, depicted Jack (Martin Henderson) arriving at Charmaine’s (Lauren Hammersley) residence to discover a shocking scene.

When the popular Netflix series returned for season 7 on Thursday, March 12, it was revealed that Charmaine had been kidnapped and that Calvin (Josh Blacker) had met his demise.

Initially, Charmaine was the prime suspect due to her mysterious disappearance. However, Brie (Zibby Allen) soon figured out that the mother of two had been taken hostage and traced it back to Charmaine’s employer Grant (Alessandro Juliani).

Virgin River is gearing up for season 7 after leaving fans with a major cliffhanger involving Charmaine. During the season 6 finale, which aired in December 2024, Lauren Hammersley’s contentious character appeared to vanish as her home was discovered in disarray. With Charmaine and her twin babies missing, fans were left to wonder about their fate.

Grant asserted that he killed Calvin to safeguard Charmaine. He was ultimately arrested for the murder of Calvin and the abduction of Charmaine.

“I knew someone was dead, but I wasn’t certain who until I saw what it could lead to,” showrunner Patrick Sean Smith shared with TV Line on Thursday. “I recognized the potential in the different scenarios, yet I aimed to explore each option to see which best fit the overall season.”

Smith referred to Calvin’s death as a “convenient” twist to conclude Calvin’s narrative, noting that he had “already returned from the dead and committed murder. [The actor was recast in season 6] as well, so it felt like the right opportunity to resolve that storyline.”

Season 7 of Virgin River experienced several cast changes, with news emerging on Thursday that Marco Grazzini will not return as a series regular.

As Netflix’s longest-running scripted series, Virgin River has gone through some unexpected cast changes — who is set to appear in season 7? Based on Robyn Carr’s book series, Virgin River chronicles the lives of residents in a small Northern California town, including Mel and Jack. The hit series premiered in 2019.

“Departures are quite common in this industry — particularly for a beloved and long-running series like Virgin River,” Grazzini, 45, who has been part of the show since season 2, told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s been a wonderful chance to portray Mike for six seasons.”

Grazzini expressed his “nothing but love for the cast, crew, and especially the amazing fans who make the show so special,” adding, “I’m looking forward to this new chapter in my career.”

In addition to Grazzini, Lauren Hammersley, who has portrayed Charmaine since the show debuted on Netflix in 2019, is also not anticipated to return. Aside from Grazzini, all other series regulars from Virgin River’s season 7 are expected to return for season 8.

This isn’t the first time the series has seen changes behind the scenes; Grayson Gurnsey departed as Ricky after season 4, and Mark Ghanimé, who played Cameron, had a surprising exit following the release of season 6.

Virgin River is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
