Jennifer Lawrence Clarifies: Robert Pattinson Film Is Not a Katniss-Edward Fanfiction

Jennifer Lawrence has shared a disclaimer prior to the debut of her new film featuring Robert Pattinson.

The stars of Die My Love, a poignant drama portraying a woman’s struggle with postpartum depression leading to psychosis, expressed their concerns during a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, November 5. Lawrence, age 35, voiced worries that fans of both her and Pattinson’s previous roles might find the film disappointing.

Lawrence rose to global fame through her portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games series, which spanned from 2012 to 2015. Pattinson, 39, made his mark as the sparkling vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight movies, released from 2008 to 2012.

“The internet is going wild about Katniss and Edward sharing the screen,” Fallon noted during their Wednesday night chat.

In response, Lawrence said, “Yeah, I’m quite anxious that people will rush to theaters expecting a Katniss and Edward fanfiction, but that’s not what this is.”

“It’s a unique, poetic, serious work of art,” she elaborated. “It’s fantastic, but if you’re anticipating fanfiction, you’ll likely be disappointed. I’m concerned that when it releases, everyone will be upset with me!”

In Die My Love—directed by Lynne Ramsay—Lawrence and Pattinson portray a married couple relocating from New York City to rural Montana, grappling with the challenges of parenthood.

During the same episode of the “Las Culturistas” podcast, Lawrence discussed her decision to go without an intimacy coordinator for her scenes with Pattinson.

“We didn’t use [an intimacy coordinator], or perhaps we did but not officially,” Lawrence told cohosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. “I felt completely comfortable with Rob. He’s not inappropriate and is very committed to [his partner] Suki Waterhouse.”

Lawrence shared that she and Pattinson devoted a lot of their time to discussing their children and relationships, noting, “There was never any awkwardness like, ‘Does he think I’m into him?’ If that were the case, I would have requested an intimacy coordinator. Many male actors can take offense if you’re not interested in them, leading to awkward dynamics. But he wasn’t like that.”

She has two children with her husband Cooke Maroney: a 3-year-old son named Cy and a newborn welcomed in March. (Lawrence has kept the baby’s gender and name private.)

Pattinson is also a father, with a 20-month-old daughter he shares with Waterhouse.

In a recent interview with The New York Times, Lawrence opened up about her own battles with postpartum depression, as she filmed Die My Love while expecting her second child.

“Having children is a selfless act. It’s fulfilling, incredible, and rewarding, but it’s also sacrificing. I had never before had to decline something I genuinely wanted to pursue,” she reflected.

“My children and family are paramount, of course, but they form a crucial part of who I am,” she added. “I wouldn’t feel whole if I couldn’t make films. It’s essential to me.”

Die My Love is set to hit theaters on Friday, November 7.
