Boston Blue’s Mika Amonsen Speaks Out on Andrew Terraciano’s Recasting
Boston Blue‘s Mika Amonsen discussed stepping into the role of Sean, previously portrayed by Andrew Terraciano on Blue Bloods and now played by Donnie Wahlberg.
“Initially, I felt a significant amount of pressure. I wanted to honor Andrew’s performance as much as possible,” Amonsen shared exclusively with Us Weekly. “I made certain visual choices regarding hair and ways of being [as Sean] that I felt should remain.”
Amonsen aimed to pay homage to Terraciano’s portrayal, expressing, “My goal is to preserve Sean in ways that resonate with fans, reflecting the character that everyone loves and the foundation Andrew laid.”
Viewers were first introduced to the Reagan family when Blue Bloods debuted on CBS in 2010. Wahlberg’s character, Danny, was married to Linda Rose Reagan (Amy Carlson), with whom he had sons Jack and Sean before her untimely death. Terraciano played Danny’s youngest son throughout the show’s 14 seasons, until Amonsen was cast as Sean in Boston Blue.
“The booking happened swiftly; I was immersed in it within a week. I binge-watched as much as I could, focusing on the later seasons to gauge Sean’s character development and his relationship with Danny,” Amonsen recounted. “I wanted to understand Sean as he transitioned into adulthood.”
Amonsen looked for ways to celebrate Terraciano’s work.
“I aimed to honor Andrew’s interpretation of Sean while also adding my unique touch. The showrunners, Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, have been supportive in allowing me the freedom to explore this new dynamic with Donnie,” he continued. “Watching Andrew, I recognized similarities in our personalities and energy. I tend to be upbeat, so that was reassuring. I felt it was important to maintain that part of myself while finding my own approach.”
Before beginning filming for season 1, Amonsen appreciated having prior material to reference.
“We’re delving into a fresh narrative. While it’s my interpretation, we haven’t explored Sean’s relationship with his father like this before. He’s stepping into a new role, as the prospect of Sean being a cop hadn’t been pursued previously,” he revealed. “Now, he’s in the same field as his dad, confronting challenges as both father and son, and as colleagues.”
Amonsen elaborated: “At first, there’s some friction as Sean navigates his new responsibilities as a man and a police officer. This evolving dynamic was a key aspect I brought to the character—exploring his adult journey and the changing nature of his relationship with his dad.”
Amonsen expressed excitement about joining a spinoff from such a prestigious franchise, noting potential challenges as fans adapt to a new actor in the role of Wahlberg’s son.
“There’s been some criticism, but I see many fans defending Sean and sharing their enjoyment of my interpretation,” Amonsen stated. “It makes me happy to see audiences engaging with the show and appreciating the direction Sean is taking.”
Boston Blue airs on CBS Fridays at 10 p.m. ET.
