Demi Lovato Discovers Liberation Through Cooking After Overcoming Eating Disorder
After years of struggling with an eating disorder, Demi Lovato has finally found serenity in the kitchen.
“Discovering freedom with food has been pivotal for my recovery journey,” the 33-year-old pop icon shared exclusively with Us Weekly ahead of the upcoming release of her first cookbook on March 17, One Plate at a Time.
Lovato disclosed in 2011 that she was diagnosed with bulimia nervosa, characterized by binge-eating followed by purging, a condition the Mayo Clinic outlines. This struggle stemmed from childhood bullying about her weight, and she has spent considerable time working to overcome it.
“I vividly recall being in treatment and going on an outing to a grocery store,” she reminisces for Us. “I broke down in tears because the abundance of food was just too overwhelming for me.”
However, a few years ago, the “Fast” vocalist began exploring cooking alongside friends.
“I discovered immense joy and had so much fun,” she expresses. “I started cooking more, experimenting in the kitchen, and trying new recipes, which truly aided my recovery.”
With her new cookbook, Lovato aims to assist others who have faced similar challenges with disordered eating. She believes that anyone can enjoy its 80-plus recipes and personal stories, regardless of their relationship with food.
“As I began crafting it, I realized there are many individuals who may have experienced eating disorders or might be new to cooking,” she explains. “It started as a way to support my recovery and assist others, but ultimately it became a cookbook for everyone looking to step into the kitchen, even if they feel intimidated.”
Beyond cooking new dishes, the Grammy nominee and New York Times bestselling author has also begun incorporating Caliwater into her daily hydration routine. She has recently become an ambassador, investor, and brand partner for the Los Angeles-based company, known for its low-sugar, electrolyte-rich cactus water drinks.
“Hydration is crucial for me, especially since I’m always in rehearsals or working out,” she shares with Us. “Staying hydrated is vital, and Caliwater really excels at that.”
Lovato, who is set to launch her It’s Not That Deep Tour on April 13 in Orlando, Florida, even helped create her own flavor, Blood Orange.
“I love it so much,” she exclaims. “I have one daily — sometimes more.”
