Sadie Robertson Reveals Baby’s Diagnosis Following Choking Incidents
Duck Dynasty star Sadie Robertson recently provided an update on her 9-month-old daughter Kit’s distressing choking episodes.
“During our first visit to the pediatrician, I mentioned that Kit breathes quite loudly,” Robertson, 28, shared during the May 20 episode of her “Whoa That’s Good” podcast. “He replied, ‘Oh, yes, I can hear that.’ He noted it down… laryngomalacia.”
Robertson’s doctor explained that Kit likely had a “floppy throat” and “turbulent breathing,” indicative of laryngomalacia, a voice box disorder.
“He told me that laryngomalacia is quite common in infants,” Robertson recalled. “It’s as if their little airway and voice box, which should be a small opening, are actually misshaped because of bent skin, causing it to flop and creating that loud breathing sound. He assured me that, most of the time, it’s nothing to worry about, provided she’s eating properly and her oxygen levels are good.”
In April, Kit briefly stopped breathing, prompting Robertson and her husband Christian Huff to notice their daughter turning blue. She was resuscitated after receiving CPR. Robertson and Huff, who are also parents to daughters Honey and Haven, took Kit to the hospital after she choked again weeks later.
“Before we were even fully admitted, [the doctor] performed a scope to examine the laryngomalacia, and within seconds, she classified it as severe laryngomalacia,” Robertson recounted on Wednesday. “We felt so grateful to be in capable hands with someone who takes our concerns seriously.”
Kit’s surgery had to be delayed when she tested positive for both rhinovirus and croup. Once she recovered, the surgery proceeded as planned to address the laryngomalacia.
“When we had the surgery, it was incredible to see the before and after images,” Robertson said. “It was severe. Her airway was almost completely blocked… We are so thankful to be in this position, and grateful for the support.”
Kit was discharged from the hospital the following day, and Robertson noticed a “dramatic improvement” in how her daughter ate, took a bottle, and her overall mood.
“We couldn’t be more grateful when we reflect on that time,” she emphasized. “We think, ‘Wow, God really provided for us in the most remarkable ways, in ways you just can’t make up.’”
