Fire Country Welcomes First Series Regular Amidst Cast and Showrunner Changes
Following a series of surprising cast departures, a shift in showrunners, and a decreased episode count, Fire Country has officially cast its first series regular.
Olivia Thirlby is set to join season 5 as a new firefighter named CJ, as reported by Deadline. This new character is characterized as “a quick-witted, fiercely independent, blue-collar, decorated urban firefighter who left her station and city for unknown reasons.”
“After six months on the road, running from her past and herself, fate brings her to Edgewater where she meets Bode,” the character details elaborated. “Despite lacking experience in fighting woodland fires, Bode sees potential in CJ for Station 42. Even with the cultural shock, she begins to believe that rural Edgewater has much to teach her.”
Before Thirlby joined, the original main cast had been intact for three seasons until the exits of Billy Burke and Stephanie Arcila. Thirlby now joins original cast members Max Thieriot, Kevin Alejandro, Jordan Calloway, Jules Latimer, and Diane Farr.
Fire Country, which premiered in 2022, chronicles the journey of inmate Bode (Thieriot) as he strives to reduce his prison term through participation in the California Conservation Camp Program. By the third season, Bode is released and eager to prove his worth at Cal Fire.
The series experienced a shakeup when it was revealed in April 2025 that budget cuts led to the exit of Burke and Arcila.
“I was completely blindsided. But I understand that this is the nature of the industry, and I’ve come to accept the ebb and flow throughout my journey. Whenever a door closes, another one opens,” Arcila, 36, exclusively shared with Us Weekly in April 2025. “We have this beautiful, ever-changing door of desires in our lives. I believe that when we resist it, we can sometimes hinder ourselves from fulfilling other passions.”
Showrunner Tia Napolitano defended these decisions.
“It’s a fire show. People can leave at any moment,” she said in an interview with Us in October 2025. “While we’re losing some characters, we’re also welcoming exciting guest appearances that will bring new conflicts, secrets, and twists to the narrative.”
Napolitano hinted that the show would strive to “spice things up” while carefully honoring those who have departed.
“Our approach has focused on honoring Vince, especially since Gabriella has moved on to a fulfilling life. She’s still part of the story. We aim to find hope amid the loss,” she commented. “The overarching theme this season revolves around rising from the ashes and recovery.”
Napolitano elaborated: “How do we rise from such challenges? We will witness everyone stepping up, celebrating Vince’s life and the legacy of his sacrifice.”
However, Napolitano has stepped away from the show and will not return for season 5.
“I am incredibly proud of the past four seasons of Fire Country,” she stated in a January announcement. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to our cast, crew, writers, producers, fans, and, of course, CBS and CBS Studios. It’s been a wonderful journey!”
