The Cast of The Secret Life of the American Teenager: What Are They Up to Now?
The Secret Life of the American Teenager tackled adolescent issues in a distinct way that was unprecedented for TV shows at the time — but where is the cast now?
The ABC Family drama ran for five seasons, from July 2008 to June 2013. The series focused on Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley) as she navigated pregnancy and parenthood while tackling the challenges of being a high school student.
Woodley was no stranger to the industry when she snagged the role that would launch her into the spotlight. She had previously appeared in The O.C. from 2003 to 2004, along with various guest roles on other shows. The Emmy nominee valued the themes of The Secret Life of the American Teenager and was enthusiastic about portraying the lead character.
However, her perspective on the storylines shifted in later seasons as she witnessed her character’s pregnancy transform into a cautionary tale, with an emphasis on abstinence.
“There were numerous elements written into the scripts that many of us, including myself, disagreed with,” she shared. “Certain belief systems were promoted that clashed with my own. Yet I felt trapped, legally. To this day, it remains one of the toughest experiences I’ve ever had. Working on Secret Life pushed me to be more outspoken about my beliefs.”
The Big Little Lies star also formed enduring friendships with her co-stars during filming. “We all feel like we’re actual high school friends,” declared Megan Park (Grace Bowman) during the cast’s October 2020 virtual reunion. “Even after all this time, it’s like no time has passed, because we shared those formative years together. You guys truly feel like my OG high school friends, which is pretty special.”
