Heroes Creator Reflects on His Decision to Cast the Late Hayden Panettiere

Heroes creator Tim Kring has shared his thoughts on casting the late Hayden Panettiere in her unforgettable role as superpowered cheerleader Claire Bennet in the NBC series.

“We didn’t search extensively; we simply saw her and that was that. To start, she was an incredible actress,” Kring, 69, told Entertainment Weekly in an interview published on Friday, September 25, celebrating Heroes’ 20th anniversary. “[Hayden] truly embodied that girl-next-door charm, and her range was remarkable.”

By the time she secured a lead role in Heroes in 2006, Panettiere was already an industry veteran, having been cast in her first commercial acting job at just 11 months old, thanks to her mother Lesley Vogel.

Prior to her role in Heroes, Panettiere had garnered attention through standout performances in popular films such as Remember the Titans and A Bug’s Life, as well as a three-year role on the daytime soap One Life to Live.

Jack Coleman, who portrayed Hayden Panettiere’s father on Heroes, has shared his sorrow over her passing at the age of 36. “I’m heartbroken. It took me a while to find the words to express my thoughts, and they will never be sufficient,” Coleman, 68, posted on Instagram on Wednesday, August 19. He continued, “I’ve loved Hayden since […]

“It was just pure talent that walked into the audition room [when Panettiere auditioned]. I can’t think of anyone else that we even considered,” Kring remembered. “For other roles, I might recall various actors from the casting process, but with her, it was clear.”

The writer-producer recalled being amazed at how Panettiere captured the “quirky” traits he envisioned for Claire Bennet.

“Even with Hayden Panettiere, I described her as the cheerleader who you had a crush on, not the one everyone else did,” Kring elaborated. “So not the golden girl, but a bit quirky, with something unique about her.”

Kring was among those who paid tribute to Panettiere’s life and legacy following her passing at age 36 in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. (The Greenville County Coroner’s Office announced that her death was accidental, resulting from the “toxic effects of fentanyl, 4-ANPP, Alprazolam, Methocarbamol, and Quetiapine.” The coroner stated that “no signs of trauma were detected that would have contributed to the death,” though an inquiry is continuing, according to Panettiere’s representative.)

“As a showrunner, I’ve come to value how rare it is to encounter a talent like Hayden’s,” King wrote in an essay for Variety on August 19. “But more than that, I will remember her as a kind and gentle person who was always a delight and an inspiration to work with.”

Reflecting on their collaboration, Kring suggested that Panettiere was truly one-of-a-kind among young actors he had ever hired.

“Most 16-year-olds lack the ability to interpret or convey these emotions, let alone embody them. But she had a profound understanding of human nature that was surprising for her age. Consequently, she uncovered moments within a scene that often made it deeper, funnier, or more impactful than what was written,” he observed. “As a writer, you long for an actor who enhances everything you write and discovers subtle nuances you didn’t realize existed. That happened frequently with her.”

Kring continued, “She was a joy to collaborate with, professional, cheerful, and willing to take risks and experiment with a scene. She had this bull-in-a-china-shop vibe — a determination that profoundly shaped how we developed her character. The best characters always strike a balance between the actor and the script.”

“And in Heroes, the boundary between Claire Bennet and Hayden began to blur,” the writer acknowledged. “She never had to adjust how she delivered lines to sound like Claire Bennet. It was the cadence of Hayden’s voice that we adapted our writing to.”
