Sons of Anarchy Creator Claims No Involvement in Spinoff Series

Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter spoke out about the newly announced spinoff Legends, featuring Charlie Hunnam alongside several original cast members.

“I understand that the news of Charlie’s show broke today, and I’ve been receiving some questions about it. I just want to clarify my stance: I’m not involved with Legends in any capacity, nor should I be,” Sutter, 66, mentioned in an Instagram video on Thursday, August 20, Instagram. “It is not related to the characters I created or the overall mythology.”

Sutter elaborated that Legends, which will be presented as a miniseries, focuses more on “the legacy” of Sons of Anarchy than the show itself. The screenwriter disclosed that Hunnam consulted him with the project idea before pitching it to FX.

“I want everyone to know that Charlie approached me early in the process, seeking my blessing while he was pitching it to the network, understanding that the intellectual property might not be legally invoked for various reasons. I gave him my full blessing,” he continued. “I genuinely wish him all the best with this endeavor.”

Sutter also mentioned that his wife, Katey Sagal, will make an appearance in the series. (Sagal portrayed Gemma Teller Morrow in Sons of Anarchy, who was Jax’s mother, played by Hunnam.)

The director teased that he had a chance to sneak a peek at the script for Legends when it was resting on his wife’s “knitting table” and expressed confidence that fans will enjoy it.

“It’s wonderfully crafted, and I believe you’ll appreciate it. And that’s my two cents,” he stated. “I have immense love for Charlie, and I think you will too for this project.”

In addition to Hunnam and Sagal returning, most of the cast will also reprise their roles. Ron Perlman, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi are all slated to return.

According to the premise, Legends will depict the Sons of Anarchy cast as they reunite “at a fan convention after more than a decade.”

“The line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood confronts a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they faced in the series,” stated the logline.

Along with starring in Legends, Hunnam will also serve as an executive producer. The series will be produced by FX Productions and 20th Television.

“When Charlie presented us with this inspired concept, we were immediately captivated by his bold and entertaining vision,” FX Entertainment president Nick Grad said in a statement following the series order. “Charlie’s talents shine through as a writer, performer, and executive producer, guiding the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a delightful meta twist on what fans believe they know.”
