Rose McIver of Ghosts Explains Her ‘Absence’ in Season 6
Rose McIver recently shared insights about her “absence” from several episodes when Ghosts returns for its sixth season.
On Friday, September 25, McIver, 37, posted a photo of a baby’s hand on Instagram, stating, “Keen-eyed viewers will notice that Sam is a little absent at the start of this season of Ghosts — I’ve been a wee bit preoccupied but will be back to join everyone soon!”
She expressed her gratitude, saying: “Huge thanks to everyone for your patience. I love both my jobs and feel truly fortunate to be supported in both.”
Her announcement hinted at the arrival of baby No. 2 with her husband George Byrne. The couple, who tied the knot in 2023, had previously welcomed a daughter in 2024. Consequently, Ghosts took measures to conceal McIver’s baby bump during season 3.
“We’re not writing it in. Currently, Jay and Sam aren’t going to have kids,” showrunner Joe Wiseman told TV Insider in February 2024. “That is something that could happen down the line.”
Wiseman added that while they are not considering a baby at this moment, future possibilities are open: “Yeah, we’re definitely open to it. It just felt a little early in the series to make such a big change.”
Showrunner Joe Port expressed his support for the idea of Sam and Jay becoming parents in later seasons. “We’re not writing [the pregnancy] in, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have [a baby] in future seasons,” he noted. “It would be fun to see all the ghosts’ perspectives on parenting.”
Ghosts, which debuted on CBS in 2021, centers on married couple Sam (McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) as they inherit a country estate. Their intention to turn the historic property into a bed and breakfast is complicated when a near-death encounter reveals the ghosts residing there.
The comedy is anticipated to return with holiday specials in 2026 before officially resuming midseason. CBS unveiled its schedule in April, leading to noticeable revisions. Ghosts, Matlock, and NCIS: Sydney are all set to make their premiere moves to 2027 midseason. Meanwhile, Matlock’s timeslot will be occupied by Elsbeth, with Cupertino debuting on the same evening. NCIS: Sydney will also transition to midseason as NCIS: Origins – which received a shorter episode order – aligns with NCIS: New York.
