The NCIS franchise continues to expand, with seven current or former series and an additional show slated for release by 2025.
Many fans may believe that the naval intelligence-focused franchise started with NCIS, but that’s actually not true. The original show was JAG, which premiered on NBC in 1995.
This series chronicled the lives of military lawyers in the Department of the Navy’s Office of the Judge Advocate General, who handled prosecution and defense in criminal cases governed by military law. Although NBC canceled the series after just one season, it was later revived by CBS.
The original series, featuring David James Elliott and Catherine Bell, introduced Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and his team during the finale of the eighth season in 2003. The buzz surrounding this backdoor pilot prompted CBS to commission a full season of NCIS, which premiered the following September.
