Letters of Support
Following Masterson’s conviction for sexual assault in September 2023, Kutcher and Kunis faced significant criticism for submitting letters of support to the judge of the case, Charlaine F. Olmedo, prior to his sentencing.
Kutcher stated, “Throughout our 25-year relationship, Danny has consistently been a positive presence in my life. I’ve never known him to lie to me. He has taught me the importance of directness and tackling issues in both life and relationships, helping to resolve them and move on.”
He further described Masterson as a “role model” and commended his parenting abilities as well as his advocacy for a drug-free lifestyle and assistance for firefighters impacted by the September 11, 2001, attacks.
On the other hand, Kunis highlighted Masterson’s “exceptional character,” expressing that “his caring demeanor and knack for offering guidance have been pivotal in my personal and professional development.”
The couple was met with swift backlash for their public support and addressed the criticism in an Instagram video. “We recognize the hurt caused by the character letters we wrote on Danny Masterson’s behalf,” Kutcher remarked in their September 2023 post. “We stand by victims,” Kunis added. “We’ve historically supported them through our work and intend to keep doing so in the future.”
As Kutcher and Kunis faced backlash for their letters supporting Masterson, an old footage emerged featuring Kutcher making an inappropriate remark regarding Hilary Duff during a 2003 episode of Punk’d.
“Hilary Duff, known for Lizzie McGuire, also has an album. She’ll be in a film titled Cheaper by the Dozen,” he said. “She’s among those we’re all anticipating to turn 18, alongside the Olsen twins.”
Soon after, another video resurfaced from a joint 2002 appearance with Kutcher and Kunis on The Rosie O’Donnell Show, where Kunis recounted a $10 bet Kutcher made to “french kiss” her while filming That ‘70s Show. “It happened in the first week. I was just a 14-year-old girl, terrified,” she noted, adding that Kutcher “never got his tongue on my mouth.”
Amid ongoing repercussions, Kutcher stepped down as chairman of Thorn, an anti-human trafficking organization he co-founded with ex-wife Moore in 2009. Kunis also resigned from her observer role on Thorn’s board after their letters supporting Masterson drew attention.
“After spending several days listening, reflecting, learning, and engaging in discussions with survivors and the Thorn leadership, I’ve concluded that the right course of action is to resign as Chairman of the Board, effective immediately. I cannot allow my misjudgment to divert attention from our mission and the children we serve,” Kutcher stated in part.
