17 Again Cast: What Are They Up to Now?
Zac Efron portrayed the younger version of Matthew Perry in the 2009 film 17 Again.
“I had the advantage of having watched Matthew throughout my life before we started filming that movie,” Efron shared in a December 2023 interview with Variety. “It wasn’t a matter of meticulously crafting the jokes or the character. I needed to make it authentic to myself and bring it to life. However, there are elements that Matthew Perry originated. The way he infused humor into his performances has left a lasting impact on me. I believe a significant part of my success stems from the comedic timing I learned from Matthew Perry over the years.”
He went on to say, “I could mentally navigate a scene and think, ‘Oh, he would definitely approach it this way, or he’d definitely do that.’ That was really all it took — that, along with stepping into my dad’s shoes, which was quite surreal.”
In 17 Again, Mike O’Donnell (Perry) finds himself at a turning point in his marriage just as he is given a magical opportunity to revisit his high school glory days. Through an enchanted twist, Mike becomes younger (played by Efron) and returns to high school — now alongside his own children.
