When it comes to portraying a romantic partner for a member of the Wayans family, Essence Atkins is eager to collect them all.

“I just need to be Kim [Wayans’] love interest, and then I can claim the trifecta,” Atkins, 53, quipped in an exclusive conversation with Us Weekly. “I’ve been the romantic lead for all of them. At this point, I feel like an honorary family member.”

Atkins humorously remarked that it can also feel a bit “incestuous,” but quickly added, “But not really. I cherish them all and enjoy collaborating with them. It’s always such a delightful, professional, and enjoyable experience. I’d promote it as a remedy. Are you facing a tough time? Work with the Wayans — it’ll lift your spirits. It’s healing for the soul.”

The actress is currently starring in CBS’s Poppa’s House alongside Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr., with a familial touch behind the scenes as Kim Wayans and Damien Dante Wayans direct multiple episodes, while Shawn Wayans and Michael Wayans contribute as writers, and Marlon Wayans makes an appearance as Damon Sr.’s brother in the episode airing on Monday, March 24.

Prior to Poppa’s House, Atkins had roles as Marlon’s ex-wife on his short-lived show and as Shawn’s girlfriend in Dance Flick.

“The reality is that I will always say yes when I hear ‘Wayans.’ This marks my sixth project with the family. I’ve crossed paths with all of them and worked with most,” she shared with Us. “I was eager to collaborate with Damon Wayans Jr. again after Dance Flick, and I’ve always wanted to work with Damon Wayans, so that was enough for me to jump in.”

Poppa’s House, which debuted in October 2024, centers on renowned talk radio host Poppa (Damon Sr.), whose perspective is challenged at work when a new female co-host (Atkins) is introduced. At home, Poppa also navigates parenting his adult son (Damon Jr.), who is trying to balance his passion with the responsibilities of being a father and husband.

In the series, Atkins’s Ivy character is being developed as a possible romantic interest for Poppa — but she’s not in any hurry for that to unfold.

“Initially, at the start of the series, we believed their relationship would progress faster. However, I think there’s something quite lovely about them forging a friendship first, developing genuine respect and admiration for each other,” Atkins elaborated. “Furthermore, as they start to see behind each other’s masks, they become a bit more hesitant and cautious about making any bold moves forward.”

Atkins remarked that Ivy and Poppa are beginning to realize their connection, stating, “He’s becoming aware of what he has to offer; it looks appealing, but what’s the inspection report like before you make a purchase? That’s wisdom, and I believe this leads to a much more rewarding experience when it finally happens. It won’t feel rushed or forced.”

She added, “These characters have worked hard to achieve their intimacy. We’ve witnessed their growth alongside each other; they’ve also managed to annoy each other at times. I appreciate the pace we’re maintaining. As for how long it will take, I’m not sure. But I anticipate there will be moments this season where viewers will be cheering for this to happen.”

Poppa’s House airs on CBS Mondays at 8:30 p.m. ET, with new episodes available for streaming the following day on Paramount+.
