3 Overlooked HBO Max Films to Enjoy This Weekend (June 13-15)
Looking for great movies to enjoy on HBO Max this weekend? You’re in luck, as the platform is packed with top-notch content. One standout is Mountainhead, a black comedy about tech entrepreneurs misbehaving, which is currently trending among viewers.
If you’re in the mood for older, often overlooked films, you’re in the right place. Watch With Us has compiled a selection of exceptional movies that deserve your attention.
Featuring stars like Michael Keaton, Jon Hamm, and America Ferrera, these films promise to keep you entertained all weekend long.
‘Knox Goes Away’ (2024)
While the world may not need yet another hitman movie, having Michael Keaton in the lead role makes it worthwhile. He plays John Knox, a contract killer on the brink of retirement, who has one final job that goes awry, leaving him with quite the mess. Complicating matters, his estranged son, Miles (James Marsden), seeks his assistance in covering up a murder. Knox excels as a hitman but struggles as a father, but helping Miles might offer him a chance at redemption.
Knox Goes Away offers a complex narrative, sometimes teetering on overwhelming (did I mention Knox has dementia and a romantic involvement with a Polish sex worker?). Yet, Keaton’s performance strikes a balance, being both chilling and surprisingly heartfelt. As an assassin grappling with a guilty conscience, his final decisions could seal his fate.
Knox Goes Away is available to stream on HBO Max.
‘Keeping Up with the Joneses’ (2016)
Jeff and Karen Gaffney (Zach Galifianakis and Isla Fisher) are a content married couple with two kids, but their lives are rather uneventful. Everything changes when the attractive and charming Tim and Natalie Jones (Jon Hamm and Gal Gadot) move in next door. The Joneses seem like the answer to Jeff and Karen’s desire for adventure, but they are concealing a major secret — they are spies, targeting none other than the Gaffneys. Although the two couples bond, will the Joneses’ personal feelings interfere with their mission?
Keeping Up with the Joneses is based on a sitcom concept that’s been executed better in Mr. and Mrs. Smith (both the film and the Amazon Prime series). Nevertheless, it remains entertaining, providing its cast with a chance to engage in absurd antics (Fisher trailing Gadot in a bustling mall is a memorable moment). Hamm shines here as a comedic actor, showcasing a lighter dimension of his talent, still primarily known for Mad Men‘s Don Draper.
Keeping Up with the Joneses is available to stream on HBO Max.
‘Six by Sondheim’ (2013)
The 2025 Tony Awards just took place, featuring Broadway icons like Audra McDonald, Jeremy Jordan, and Darren Criss from Glee. (Criss won Best Actor in a Musical for Maybe Happy Ending.) They all make appearances in Six by Sondheim, a documentary celebrating the genius of Stephen Sondheim, the composer of many classic showtunes.
As indicated by the title, the documentary highlights six songs from the legendary lyricist: “Something’s Coming” from West Side Story; “Being Alive” from Company; “Opening Doors” from Merrily We Roll Along; and others. These pieces are beautifully staged, featuring standout performances like Todd Haynes’ unique rendition of “I’m Still Here” with Jarvis Cocker, and the poignant “Send in the Clowns” featuring McDonald and Will Swenson. Although theater enthusiasts will relish it most, Six by Sondheim appeals to anyone who appreciates a good song and the stories behind their creation.
