The Summer I Turned Pretty has made an impact by incorporating Taylor Swift‘s music to enhance key moments throughout the seasons.
Fans of the original book series were pleasantly surprised when season 1 depicted Belly (Lola Tung)’s infatuation with Conrad (Christopher Briney) using Swift’s beloved track “Lover” to set the mood.
Creator Jenny Han later discussed how the enthusiasm of the show’s fanbase played a role in shaping the soundtrack.
“For me, as a fan, giving book fans that moment is incredibly meaningful. If you love The Summer I Turned Pretty, you likely love Taylor Swift too,” Han shared with The Wrap in June 2022. “Many fans have requested her music for the show, and I was never sure if it would be possible. When it happened, I could hardly believe it! That was probably my most exciting moment in the entire process. I’m thrilled that we have five songs in total, which I think will be quite unexpected during some of the big moments.”
Season 2 of the popular Prime Video series, which debuted in July 2023, took things up a notch with nearly twice as many songs from Swift.
“In S1, we featured FIVE Taylor Swift songs… can you guess how many we have in S2? 🤭 Take a guess before the show goes live on 7/14! #thesummeriturnedpretty #taylorswift,” Han posted on Instagram during that time. “P.S. August and Back to December were included for the campaign. We’re bringing you 9 DIFFERENT songs in the series!! 🤗.”
