Boston Blue EPs Discuss Cast Exits, Spinoff Plans, and Season 2 Surprises
Blue Bloods‘ spinoff Boston Blue wrapped up its first season, hinting at a possible cast departure while teasing further surprises for season 2.
In the season 1 finale, airing on Friday, May 22, Lena (Sonequa Martin-Green) started her day anxiously preparing to meet her biological father. Her day took a darker turn when she learned that her boyfriend, Brian (Ryan Broussard), was considering a job in another state, culminating in her being shot.
Despite her ordeal, Lena recovered but endured nerve damage that temporarily left her in a wheelchair. As she prepared for a family dinner, the audience witnessed Brian’s car being deliberately hit, resulting in a crash that sent it into the ocean.
“We’ll start season 2 a bit after a time jump, moving past Lena’s recovery from her injuries,” showrunner Brandon Sonnier revealed in an exclusive interview with executive producer Brandon Margolis for Us Weekly. “This shift will help us delve into the mystery of who was behind the wheel and the backstory of that event.”
He added, “This mystery becomes a key element in the lives of Lena, Danny, and the rest of the Reagans and Silvers, propelling them to uncover the truth and the larger scheme at play as we progress through the season.”
In other finale highlights, Will Hochman returned as Danny’s (Donnie Wahlberg) nephew while Danny’s girlfriend, Baez (Marisa Ramirez), reappeared, leading to their reconciliation and discussions about moving in together as the first season closed.
Looking forward to season 2, Sonnier hinted at more exploration of Boston and the evolving relationships within the newly formed family dynamics: “We’re excited to delve into the relationships that have developed and explore crossovers now that we’ve established the families and their contexts.”

Is Ryan Broussard Leaving the Show After Brian Was Seemingly Killed?
While Margolis and Sonnier refrained from confirming or denying Brian’s fate, they praised the actor as a “lovely” addition to the cast.
“We’ve enjoyed collaborating with him this season. If there’s a chance for his return in season 2, we’d gladly pursue it,” Margolis noted. “But cliffhangers exist for a reason; viewers need to return to find out what happens next.”
He also remarked that Lena’s challenges will be addressed in season 2, stating, “We see opportunities for her and Danny to bond more as a result. Season 2 will focus on uncovering the identity of the driver and seeking justice for Rodgers.”
How Did the Will Hochman Cameo Happen?
Blue Bloods fans were delighted by Hochman’s unexpected appearance. Margolis explained to Us, “Invitations to the entire Reagan family were extended, but Hochman’s role came about because Wahlberg learned he was in town for another project.”
“It aligned perfectly with our storyline about discovering new family members and Joe Hill’s journey in learning about the Reagans. It paralleled Lena’s experiences beautifully, so it was serendipitous that he was available,” he continued, expressing hopes for future collaborations.
What About Other ‘Blue Bloods’ Alums?
The writers made it clear that they welcome all characters from the original series. Regarding Tom Selleck, Sonnier emphasized that the story must be appropriate for Frank’s return.
“It’s a significant decision and we want to ensure we tell the right tale,” he asserted. “It has to resonate with Frank’s character, and align with Danny and Sean as well. When the moment is right, we may already have plans in place.”
Ultimately, the aim is to bring both familiar and new Reagans into Boston Blue.
“Continuing their stories enriches our narrative,” Margolis noted. “We’d love to extend invitations to both new and returning Reagans.”
What Does the Finale Mean for Danny and Baez?
“We cherish that relationship, acknowledging it has its ups and downs. There are challenges in navigating their dynamic,” Sonnier reflected on Danny and Baez’s reunion. “Two adults in a relationship across different cities will experience highs and lows. We are keen to explore this relationship deeply.”
Sonnier humorously noted the audience’s “outcry,” adding, “It made their reunion all the more gratifying when she came back to reassure him that ‘Everything’s going to be OK.’ Ending on that note underscores the reality and strength of their relationship.”
Regarding what Baez’s potential move to Boston means for Ramirez’s appearances in season 2, Margolis teased, “All we can confirm is Baez will return. That’s literally all we can share. We enjoy Marisa’s presence; her chemistry with the characters lights up the screen, and we always look for ways to tell their stories.”
Could There Be a Boston Blue Spinoff?
The duo did not dismiss the idea of a medical drama set in the same universe when it was suggested, stating, “If the right story presents itself, we would absolutely be interested.”
