
Current Cast List for the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ Series
With a fresh “Harry Potter” series set to debut, speculation around casting choices has surged online as fans eagerly anticipate who will embody these cherished characters next.
The HBO series‘ official description indicates that it will be a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books.
According to HBO, “Each season will delve into every aspect of the wizarding world, bringing ‘Harry Potter’ and its extraordinary adventures to both new and existing fans,” as stated in their press release.
With Rowling acting as executive producer, the show also pledges to “highlight an exciting and talented cast that will lead a new generation of fans,” and will be available exclusively on Max.
However, despite the introduction of fresh faces, the original eight films will continue to be honored. HBO emphasizes that “the classic and cherished original films will remain central to the franchise and accessible worldwide.”

Who is in the cast of HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ show?
John Lithgow

Lithgow is set to portray the esteemed Hogwarts Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, whose full name is Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore.
Famous for his performances in “The Crown” and “Conclave,” Lithgow disclosed his casting to ScreenRant before HBO made the announcement official.
“It was not an easy decision as it will define my last chapter in life, but I’m thrilled,” he shared with the outlet. “Some amazing individuals are redirecting their focus back to Harry Potter, making it a tough decision for me. By the wrap party, I’ll be around 87 years old, but I’ve committed to it.”
In the film adaptations, the role of Dumbledore was first played by Richard Harris until his death in 2002. Michael Gambon then carried the role forward until the concluding movie, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.” Gambon passed away in September 2023 at the age of 82.
Jude Law portrayed a younger version of Dumbledore in the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise.

McTeer is set to embody the role of Minerva McGonagall, the transfiguration professor and head of Gryffindor House.
Known for her work in “Tumbleweeds” and “Albert Nobbs,” McTeer steps into the shoes of the beloved, Quidditch-loving McGonagall, who was previously portrayed by Maggie Smith, who passed away in 2024 at the age of 89.
Paapa Essiedu

Essiedu has been cast as Severus Snape, the potions professor with a complex background.
Snape, who served as the head of Slytherin House, was once a childhood rival of Harry’s father, James, and harbored unrequited love for Harry’s mother, Lily. The role was initially brought to life by Alan Rickman, who passed away in 2016.
Essiedu is recognized for his work in “I May Destroy You” and “The Outrun.”
Nick Frost

Frost will take on the role of Rubeus Hagrid, Hogwarts’ beloved gamekeeper, known for his pink umbrella.
Previously portrayed by Robbie Coltrane, who passed away in 2022, Frost steps into the shoes of this half-giant character after his appearances in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Paul.”
Luke Thallon

In the series’ opening book, Professor Quirrell is tasked with teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts, a position rumored to carry a curse.
The character was originally depicted by Ian Hart, but now Thallon, recognized for “Present Laughter,” takes on the role.
Paul Whitehouse
