Emily in Paris brought a twist by having its protagonist leave France — but what will unfold next?

The Netflix series, which first aired in 2020, initially followed Emily’s transition from the U.S. to France and the challenges she faced. Emily (Lily Collins) soon found herself entangled in a love triangle with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) and Alfie (Lucien Laviscount). However, the dynamics shifted drastically by the conclusion of season 4.

Though Emily and Gabriel sought to rekindle their romance, things took an unexpected turn. Emily moved on with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini), while Gabriel recognized his desire to win her back. In the meantime, Emily had relocated to Rome, appearing to build her future alongside Marcello.

Beneath the surface, creator Darren Star addressed worries that Emily in Paris would transform into Emily in Rome. Nevertheless, concerns lingered regarding Gabriel’s narrative arc following Bravo’s comments about the show’s perceived “lack of risk.”

“In season 1, I saw a lot of myself in him. But as they changed his character to be more oblivious and continuously victimized, it became less enjoyable to portray,” he shared with IndieWire in October 2024. “Seeing a beloved character turn into something unrecognizable just made me drift away from him.”

Bravo hinted at the possibility of stepping back from the show.

“It makes me reconsider participating in season 5 — since my contract ends after season 4. I genuinely want to see if Gabriel can return to his fun, charming self,” he added. “After three seasons of portraying someone melancholic and lost, it no longer feels entertaining. It’s a comedy, and instead of joining in the fun, I feel like I’m fading away.”

However, the actor eventually signed on for season 5 after Netflix renewed the series. How Bravo’s criticisms will be addressed remains uncertain. Keep reading for all the details about season 5 of Emily in Paris:

Will Season 5 Stay in Paris or Move to Rome?

Despite fan worries over the setting of season 5, Star highlighted a key point to Deadline, stating in September 2024, “She hasn’t changed her Instagram handle to Emily in Rome. She’s working in Rome occasionally. Sylvie’s company has an office there, and Emily is setting that up. In my view, it’s definitely not a permanent move to Rome. We’re not abandoning Paris.”

What About the Call for the Show to Remain in Rome?

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed to Variety in October 2024 his intent to “secure that Emily in Paris doesn’t shift to Italy for season 5.” Reports have since suggested that the new season will continue in Paris, with some scenes filmed in Rome. Additional locations like Saint-Tropez or Megeve are also being considered.

“I believe it broadens the show’s universe. Just when Emily has become comfortable in Paris, she is thrown into another country, where she’ll face cultural differences,” Star teased to TVLine in September 2024. “We’re also exploring the contrasts between the French and the Italians. It’s a fresh perspective, but it doesn’t equate to abandoning Paris.”

Is There a Possibility for Emily and Gabriel to Reconcile?

Stéphanie Branchu/Netflix

“I think Gabriel has come to realize that he doesn’t want to part with Emily easily, and he may have made a significant mistake. They had a major dispute and a period of cooling off. However, by season’s end, I believe he understands there’s something unresolved between them,” Star revealed to Deadline after the season 4 finale. “What that implies for their future is uncertain. It doesn’t automatically mean they will end up together or even contact each other, but I do think there’s incomplete business.”

Is Marcello Going to Stick Around?

Giulia Parmigiani/Netflix

Star remained ambiguous about Marcello’s future involvement in season 5, stating to TVLine, “Initially, we have more insight into Gabriel than Marcello. I see Marcello as someone Emily is just beginning to know and is currently infatuated with. The history between Gabriel and Emily is much deeper.”

He added, “A large aspect of what transpired this season for Emily and Gabriel involved their romantic ideals, akin to the rose-colored glasses being removed. Many couples experience this evolution, leading to realizations of what they truly value.”

Is Lucas Bravo Returning?

Stephanie Branchu/Netflix

Bravo is confirmed to shoot scenes for season 5 when filming begins in May 2025, as per Variety. Gabriel’s Michelin-rated restaurant is expected to serve as one of the settings for the new season, following Bravo’s prior discontent with Gabriel’s character progression in the recent seasons.

“The ‘sexy chef’ was integral to my portrayal in season 1, but as seasons progressed, we drifted due to the choices made about his character arc,” Bravo conveyed in October 2024 to IndieWire. “I feel like I’ve distanced myself from him significantly.”

Bravo mentioned attempting to express his concerns, adding, “[But] there are limitations to what I can do within a script. I’ve endeavored for years to add depth, but we have little freedom on set. We must adhere to the vision they have and comply.”

At that time, a source disclosed to Us Weekly, “The series is called Emily in Paris — it’s not about Gabriel. People are feeling discontent over his remarks. There’s likely to be increased tension.”

Will Alfie and Camille Make a Comeback?

Stéphanie Branchu/Netflix

Alfie and Camille (Camille Razat) had diminished roles during the latter half of season 4, but Starr ensured they would return.

“Characters ebb and flow in people’s lives on television, but that doesn’t mean they disappear forever,” Star stated to Deadline, though he remained guarded about Camille’s storyline. “While characters may come in and out, it doesn’t imply we won’t see them again. I can’t confirm how soon we might see Camille, but her presence remains integral to the series.”

Laviscount is confirmed to reprise his role as a series regular in season 5.

“I believe the show is fantastic and brings joy to people,” he told Us in October 2024. “I enjoy filming it and cherish my co-stars.”

“What you witness in Emily in Paris is a character I’ve relished playing for three seasons. I feel immensely grateful for the opportunity to portray Alfie on screen.”
