2025 is shaping up to be a significant year for television spinoffs, with shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, 9-1-1, The Big Bang Theory, and others expanding their universes on screen.

ABC piqued Us‘s interest with the announcement of a second spinoff for 9-1-1. The original series, which debuted on Fox in 2018, centers around first responders in Los Angeles, featuring a main cast that includes Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Oliver Stark, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Guzman, Kenneth Choi, and Aisha Hinds.

The first spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, follows a firefighter from New York (played by Rob Lowe) who moves to Texas, wrestling with personal challenges while managing his responsibilities. The ensemble cast also includes Ronen Rubinstein, Sierra McClain, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael L. Silva, Julian Works, and Gina Torres.

By 2023, 9-1-1: Lone Star secured a fifth and final season on Fox. Eventually, cocreators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Tim Minear shifted their attention toward developing a new spinoff set in a different location.

Ollie Upton/HBO; Liam Daniel/Netflix Have you noticed the trend where TV shows have shifted from creating spinoffs to focusing on prequels? Traditionally, when a show gained popularity, it would expand within the same timeline. Nowadays, networks and streaming platforms are opting to explore the past with prequels of beloved series. For instance, Bridgerton is […]

In October 2024, Murphy shared with Variety, “Tim Minear and I are actively developing a new spinoff that we aim to have on the air by next fall. Unfortunately, while we all adore Lone Star, the financial aspects didn’t align. It’s a Disney operation under a Fox banner, which was never sustainable. We had a great run, though.”

He added, “We’re excited about launching a new series in a yet-to-be-disclosed city, which promises to be a lot of fun. After moving to ABC, 9-1-1 became one of the top shows on Thursday nights. They clearly have an appetite for this kind of content, and we’re eager to deliver another series that I’m truly passionate about.”

Meanwhile, CBS is expanding Fire Country with a spinoff focusing on Morena Baccarin‘s character, Mickey. Titled Sheriff Country, the series will follow Mickey as she combats crime in her modest town while dealing with her ex-con father and a mysterious event involving her rebellious daughter.

“I’m thrilled about this project. Personally, I’m quite proud of what we’ve accomplished thus far,” said Max Thieriot, the lead and creator of Fire Country, regarding the forthcoming CBS show in October 2024. “I only have glimpses of where we are in the discussions for season one, but what I’ve seen so far excites me immensely.”

As an executive producer of Sheriff Country, Thieriot remarked that the show is falling into place, stating, “The enthusiasm in the writers’ room is palpable. When they feel good about the material they’re crafting, it typically translates to quality content. It’s shaping up to be a delightful counterpart to our existing series.”

He concluded with, “Viewers will get a chance to explore a different facet of Edgewater and meet new characters in this community. Delving into the town’s diverse aspects is going to be a lot of fun. It will enrich our understanding of the community and its inhabitants, giving the world a greater sense of completeness.”
