Glen Powell has launched his new condiment brand with great success, and the actor recently spoke with Us Weekly to express some of his more contentious food opinions.

“Honestly, I don’t think anyone has really figured out how to eat a lobster. So I’d probably advise against it,” Powell, 36, humorously remarked when discussing his ideal first date meals and those he avoids in his My Life in Food feature from the latest issue of Us Weekly, currently available. “Oysters are always a safe bet. I think eating pork ribs might be a daunting sight for a first date; they probably won’t grasp it until we're well into the relationship.”

The self-proclaimed sauce enthusiast — “If this goes well, I might get a license plate that says ‘Sauce Boss’ on my next car,” he quipped to Us — recently unveiled his first-ever venture, a collection of organic pantry essentials named Smash Kitchen, earlier this month. He didn't hesitate to share some surprising favorites.

“I’ve heard some interesting combinations. Someone once told me, ‘Yeah, I put ketchup on blueberries,’” he shared with Us regarding the brand's launch process. “I’ve actually developed a taste for ketchup on waffles. Pair it with chicken and waffles and some hot honey ketchup, and it’s amazing.”

While Us may not officially support those flavor pairings, we can vouch for our favorites from Smash Kitchen, such as hot honey ketchup and spicy mayonnaise, which truly offer something special — whether on the table or the BBQ grill.

For Powell, the brand's roots trace back to his childhood.

“Growing up in Texas, barbecue sauce reigned supreme, and my family was always whipping up their own recipes, blending flavors, and experimenting to enhance things,” Powell told Us. “These moments were integral to our family life. Many of my fondest memories were created in the kitchen.”

What underrated dish or sauce do you appreciate?

The exciting aspect of exploring condiments is when you introduce your favorites to others, and they share their unique pairings. I’ve encountered some odd combinations. Someone even said, ‘Yeah, I drizzle ketchup over blueberries.’ I’ve come to adore ketchup on waffles myself. Chicken and waffles paired with hot honey ketchup is absolutely delicious.

Which snack captivates you the most?

Of course, I’m infatuated with my dog Brisket, but I'm also crazy about the actual meat. I love adding brisket to my breakfast tacos — just a bit of scrambled eggs, a slice of brisket or chopped brisket, and finishing it off with jalapeños and either hot sauce or BBQ sauce.

If you could have one last meal, what would it be?

To be honest, I’m a major fan of pork ribs. I might even hold the record for the most ribs consumed at the Salt Lick [BBQ] in Driftwood, Texas. The quantity of ribs I can devour is quite impressive. I’d likely leave very full after enjoying some pork ribs.

What international cuisine do you love the most and why?

Indian cuisine. It’s fantastic! It’s been exciting to discover that our mustards, both Dijon and regular, work well with curry. I’ve always appreciated spice, so I’m really into anything south of the border. Growing up in Texas, I developed a love for Tex-Mex and Mexican food. I usually prefer my dishes on the spicier side.

What’s your ideal Mexican meal?

I can whip up a fantastic guacamole. I’d start with homemade guac, and since I love grilling, I’d probably prepare fajitas for everyone — fresh onions and peppers, topped off with some homemade Texas queso. My sister handles that part. We could wrap it up with some fried ice cream, and perhaps enjoy a little tequila as well.

What makes the perfect margarita?

One of my favorite additions to a margarita is crushed jalapeño. When I make drinks for guests, I always crush fresh jalapeños and an orange slice. It creates a delightful balance of sweet and spicy.

What food didn’t you enjoy as a child?

I was never a big fan of cheese, though I do enjoy pizza. There are quite a few cheeses that I find unappetizing. But since I do eat pizza, it’s a bit puzzling. Perhaps it’s a texture issue, but you’ll notice I can be quite particular about cheese.

What do you order on a first date — or avoid ordering?

Honestly, I believe nobody truly knows how to eat a lobster. So, I’d suggest avoiding that. Oysters are always a safe choice. Eating pork ribs might be a bit intimidating for a first date; it might only make sense later in the relationship.

Do you have a preferred cooking show?

I think it’s hard to find someone who isn’t a fan of Top Chef. That show is a classic. I’m particularly excited to sit down with Martha Stewart, which is a significant event for my family and me — who doesn’t adore Martha Stewart? I’m eager to chat with her about Smash and possibly even pick up some tips.
