Greer Grammer Reflects on Her Relationship with Dad Kelsey Grammer After Their Estrangement
Greer Grammer is candidly sharing insights about her relationship with her father, Kelsey Grammer.
Kelsey welcomed Greer in 1992 with ex Barrie Buckner. When Greer was just 4, her father moved out, leading to a 12-year estrangement. Their paths crossed again at a Christmas Tree lot in California when she was 16 and volunteering there.
During her November 2025 appearance on the “Pretty Basic” podcast, Greer shared that she had anticipated Kelsey’s visit to the lot long before it actually happened.
“As my day was winding down, I turned around to see someone walk in,” Greer remembered, noting it was her father, along with his then-wife Camille Meyer and their daughter, Mason. “Maybe it was just my imagination, but I felt like everyone collectively held their breath.”
Greer chose to stay, despite the tension in the moment.
“If anyone’s going to feel awkward here, it’s not going to be me; I haven’t done anything wrong,” she asserted. “As a child, I have no reason to feel ashamed or guilty.”

Acting Wisdom From Her Father
“He encouraged me to pursue acting purely for the love of it,” she recounted during a 2014 interview. “Once, we had an in-depth discussion where he spoke frankly about the harsh realities of Hollywood for women, advising me, ‘Don’t let it affect you.’ It still moves me when I think back on it.”
A Typical Childhood
In a 2015 interview with Glamour, Greer reminisced about having a “normal” childhood, despite the fame surrounding her father.
“Occasionally, I would question if people wanted to befriend me for who I am or for my dad’s fame,” she confessed. “That was my primary struggle growing up, and it remains a challenge, but it helps reveal who is truly genuine.”
Earliest Memories With Kelsey
On the “Pretty Basic” podcast, Greer mentioned visiting the Frasier set with her dad during her childhood.
“I vividly remember attending a gathering at my dad’s,” Greer shared in November 2025. “I can also recall him attending my preschool rendition of the Wizard of Oz, which he remembers as well because we’ve discussed it.”
Seeing Him ‘Everywhere’ as a Child
Growing up, it was “difficult” for Greer to view Kelsey as a public figure, yet it deepened her understanding of her mother.
“I have immense respect for my mother as an adult; I can only imagine how painful it must have been to see someone you love on a billboard,” Greer reflected on the podcast. “That must have hurt deeply, leaving her with a child who resembles him.”
Years later, Greer learned that her mother would write letters to Kelsey’s fan mail address.
A Chance Encounter
During the November 2025 podcast, Greer recalled that at age 11, she once “ran away” from Kelsey when she spotted him at a Blockbuster.
“I fled,” she confessed.
Reuniting With Kelsey
Ultimately, Greer and Kelsey embraced at the Christmas Tree lot—though that wasn’t her original intention.
“I thought, ‘No, I’m okay. He’s shopping for Christmas trees with his family; I don’t want to intrude on that. That little girl deserves her space,’” Greer shared during the November 2025 podcast. “In hindsight, I realize that perhaps it was my place to connect.”
The encounter ended positively as they exchanged phone numbers and later met for lunch, marking the beginning of their renewed relationship.
The Weight of a Last Name
Kelsey reportedly suggested to Greer’s mother that it might be “easier” for Greer if she didn’t carry his last name.
“He told me this later: ‘I thought it might be better for you to not have my last name,’” she disclosed during the November 2025 podcast. “When he told me that at 19, I was in tears. To me, it felt like the cruelest thing to say.”
Financial Support From Kelsey
Greer noted that Kelsey fulfilled his “mandatory child support” obligations until she turned 18, covering her private school tuition and her college expenses at the University of Southern California. Once she reached 18, however, Greer shared that she was “cut off” and clarified that she has “no trust fund.”
