Handmaid’s Tale Unveils Josh Charles as Commander Wharton: Key Details to Know
The Handmaid’s Tale has finally disclosed the character played by Josh Charles in its final season — but what details can we uncover about his enigmatic role?
In the initial three episodes of season 6, released by Hulu on Tuesday, April 8, Charles, 53, makes his appearance as Nick’s (Max Minghella) father-in-law. Following Nick’s return to his spouse Rose (Carey Cox) — who was upset over his confrontation with Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford) regarding June (Elisabeth Moss) — Commander Wharton engaged him in conversation.
Charles’ prominent character also played a pivotal role in bringing Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) back to Gilead (specifically, New Bethlehem). He inquired about Serena’s absence, triggering events that ultimately resulted in her becoming the spokesperson for New Bethlehem.
Prior to season 6, Commander Lawrence was a character only referenced occasionally. The only mention of Rose’s father came from Commander MacKenzie (Jason Butler Harner), who was an old friend of his, as he observed Nick’s unexpected interactions with Mark (Sam Jaeger).
The Handmaid’s Tale, which debuted in 2017, unfolds in a dystopian future where declining fertility rates compel women to be assigned to men for childbearing. Based on the novel by Margaret Atwood, this acclaimed Hulu series features stars such as Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Minghella, Samira Wiley, and Amanda Brugel.
As fans eagerly anticipate how the series will conclude, the cast shared insights on what lies ahead. “The ending is surprisingly positive for the show and this season, which is uncommon for us. It’s a cliffhanger,” Moss, 42, shared with The Hollywood Reporter in November 2022 regarding the finale. “However, there’s a sense of hope. Naturally, it includes someone special to her on the train, representing a significant part of this experience.”
Moss further hinted at what viewers might expect in the final chapter, revealing to Elle, “June will discover her identity and the person she intends to become for the rest of her life.”
Meanwhile, executive producer Warren Littlefield described the finale of The Handmaid’s Tale as “truly satisfying.”
“Navigating the world of Gilead can often be a challenging ride for our audience,” he teased to Us earlier this month. “However, I believe their patience will be rewarded as this final year showcases ordinary women doing extraordinary things. The revolution is underway and they are proving highly effective. There’s a sense of joy. Is Gilead still present? Yes. Yet, we celebrate their achievements, and I think it will greatly satisfy the audience.”
However, not every query will be resolved.
“We are poised to embark on a new journey with The Testaments. That world still includes Gilead, but it offers a completely fresh perspective,” Littlefield remarked. “We will fulfill the expectations and provide a triumphant experience for our audience who have been with us through six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale. Curiosity will drive them to see more and explore where The Testaments leads.”
The Handmaid’s Tale airs on Tuesdays, with new episodes streaming on Hulu.
